Will Nolan Return for a Third Batman Movie?
The Los Angeles Times has posted the first part of its three-part interview with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan in which he briefly addresses what will determine whether he'll be back for a third film:
Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

Während eines Blu-ray Release Events zu TDK äußerte sich Nolan zu einer möglichen Fortsetzung:
If he made a third film, it would be for no reason but the continuation of story. He is currently looking into where the story would go and if it needs to go there. He maintained that it's very hard to make a movie of this scale (and specified he wasn't asking for our sympathy, drawing a laugh from the crowd) - it's two hard years and you gotta love it. One of his biggest fears is getting halfway through making a film and realizing it's unnecessary and he doesn't want to make it anymore. If there is a third story that needs to be told, there will be a third film, but nothing is set in stone or a given. (aintitcool.com)

The Dark Knight: Sequel weiter offen
Warner Bros.

Next Batman Movie in 2011?
New Jersey's Courier-Post talked to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight executive producer Michael Uslan, who expects the third installment of the Christopher Nolan-directed films, starring Christian Bale, to hit theaters in 2011:
Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the "Dark Knight" sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman's supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. "It's one of those deals where if I told you, I'd have to kill you," he says with a chuckle.
In related news, while The Dark Knight did not receive the Producer of the Year Award at the Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday (it went to Slumdog Millionaire), the movie did receive awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday - Heath Ledger won for Best Supporting Actor and The Dark Knight also won Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Batman Franchise to Stay Dark at Least Two Years
Holy bad news, Batfans. Looks like a Dark Knight sequel is at least two years away.
Director Christopher Nolan has inked a deal with Warner Bros. to helm Inception, based on his own screenplay. The sci-fi action film "set within the architecture of the mind" aims to begin shooting this summer and hit theaters in summer 2010, according to studio.
In case anyone's forgotten, Knight was a box-office monster, scoring the second-highest gross of all time. Additionally, deceased star Heath Ledger has scored a Best Supporting Actor prize in nearly every awards show this season, with only the Oscars to go.
Batman lovers should be used to exercising patience, though. Three years passed between the first Christian Bale-fronted venture, 2005's Batman Begins, and last year's The Dark Knight. During that span Nolan released the fantasy thriller The Prestige, starring Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival magicians.

Batman 3 ohne Christopher Nolan

Christian Bale Says There Might Not Be Another Batman Movie
'I truly don't know,' Christian Bale says of the fate of the character.
Tim Burton directed two. So did Joel Schumacher. Might Christopher Nolan also stop at two "Batman" flicks? Could the seventh big-screen caped crusader adventure since 1989 require the services of a fourth director? Rumors that Nolan might not return for another go at Gotham City have been rampant and according to Bruce Wayne himself — Christian Bale — a follow-up to "The Dark Knight" might never materialize.
"I truly don't know that we're ever going to see another 'Batman' movie," Bale told MTV News while promoting his Great Depression-era crime thriller, "Public Enemies."
While Bale maintained no less than three times during the interview that he was unsure another "Batman" will be made, the 35-year-old actor is contractually obligated to return — however, Nolan is not. And Bale simply can't conceive of having to reprise his role without the director by his side.
"I don't even want to think about it," he said.
What might keep Nolan from returning? "It would be purely that he would need to find a story that was good enough — and if he can't find that, then it wouldn't happen," Bale explained.
While Nolan is not under contract, Bale continued to say, "Chris Nolan's the boss," underscoring the deep connection in his mind between the comic book franchise and the director.
Without a script or a director, Bale was reluctant to speculate about what a future "Batman" would look like. "I'm even a step away from having to consider that," he said.

Next Batman Movie to Start Filming Next Year!
Gary Oldman just announced at the Warner Bros. Book of Eli panel that a third Batman film will go into production next year. "I think the next Batman is next year," he told a fan who asked about when the long-awaited "Dark Knight" follow-up would hit, "We start shooting next year. You didn't hear that from me."

Next Batman Movie to be Fully Shot in IMAX?
Ain't It Cool News has posted an interesting rumor saying that Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. Pictures could be planning to shoot the follow-up to The Dark Knight completely in IMAX format:
The THIRD chapter of Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader's saga could very well be FULLY shot in IMAX, not IMAX Digital - but the beautiful, stunning IMAX that we saw pieces of THE DARK KNIGHT in.
Now this is something that I'm sure a lot of you will feel is a no-brainer. Nolan blew us away with the IMAX sequences in that film - but it was a very tough process to work in. Mainly due to the limitations of how many available real IMAX rigs there are. Not only that, but lenses had to be created, adapted and god forbid one broke down. Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with INCEPTION first - besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures... was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again - the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX... the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras... Well... it is daunting, but as Nolan proved with DARK KNIGHT - the difference is stunning.
We'll have to wait and see if this does indeed happen.

Nolan/B3 Decision Coming January '10?
There’s some scuttlebutt that in early 2010, Warner Bros. and Chris Nolan will finalize the plan for BATMAN 3, according to a solid and longtime BOF source. Whether there will be an announcement or not remains to be seen.
Our guy told BOF that in his opinion, the longer we don’t here a Nolan/B3 announcement in 2010, the less likely it is that the director will return. (I don’t know if I necessarily agree with that since I’m of the belief that Chris has already signed on.)
The wildcard here in my opinion is INCEPTION. Will Warner Bros. want to announce B3 before, during, or after the marketing/publicity blitz for that film? I say if Mr. Nolan is returning (and I think that’s a definite), they might as well go ahead and make the announcement in early 2010. Nolan’s going to get peppered with B3 questions either way while he’s out doing press for INCEPTION anyway, so I don’t see any sense in keeping it a secret.
Regardless, our source also confirmed the obvious -- there’s going to be a BATMAN 3 with or without Nolan. And although they’re operating under the assumption that he will return, they do have their ducks in a row -- just in case.
Here's hoping that we do indeed get a "Nolan is returning for BATMAN 3" announcement early next year.

Goyer and Jonah Nolan Writing Next Batman Movie?
Last week, news broke that David Goyer was exiting ABC's "FlashForward" as showrunner so that he can again concentrate on his feature career.
"As my feature projects have started ramping up again, I felt I was being pulled in too many directions," Goyer said. "I'm proud of the show and excited about the relaunch. It's in great hands."
Once again buried in a story on Deadline Hollywood is the revelation that one of those features is none other than The Dark Knight follow-up:
Of course, Goyer's feature career is really heating up, since he co-wrote Batman Begins, and penned the story for The Dark Knight, and is now writing the third Batman installment with Chris Nolan's brother Jonah.

Christopher Nolan on his Batman Plans
Geoff Boucher of L.A. Times' Hero Complex had a chance to visit Christopher Nolan in the editing suite for his upcoming sci-fi thriller Inception, and of course, he couldn't pass up an opportunity like that without asking about Nolan's plans for his Superman reboot and Batman.
[...]
Eventually, the Nolans and Goyer got over the earlier impasse with a second Batman sequel, and things are certainly moving forward on that third movie. Nolan wouldn't confirm any of the dozens of internet rumors about who might play the villain but he did say:
“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film an great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story. We have a great ensemble, that’s one of the attractions of doing another film, since we’ve been having a great time for years.”

No 3D for Next Batman Movie?
Cinematical got a chance to speak to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight director of photography Wally Pfister, who said that there's a good chance the next Batman film won't be released in 3D. A full IMAX release is possible, however.
"What Chris and I have talked about is doing something cool and something interesting," Pfister said. "[Director] Brad Bird was [saying] 'you've got to shoot the whole thing in IMAX!' I was like, yeah, I've talked to Chris about that."
The technology required to do that would be cumbersome. "I did it for one shot of 'The Dark Knight' because he said, you have to say you did it, and literally I had this strapped to my shoulder and I was carrying it. But I think Chris is game for doing something interesting like that, Lord knows that the 3-D fad might pass by the time that summer comes around."
Pfister does know one thing for sure. "He doesn't want to shoot on video, and I'm the same way."

Warner Bros. Pictures has set a July 20, 2012 release date for Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie in conventional and IMAX theaters! That is a little over two weeks after Sony Pictures is releasing their Spider-Man reboot on July 3, 2012. Christopher Nolan on Batman
Empire magazine talked to Christopher Nolan, whose new film Inception opens July 16, and got some great quotes from the helmer on the next Batman movie, coming July 20, 2012.
He still hasn't officially signed on to direct new Batman movie. "No I haven't. There is a point where you're just being precious about it and people get annoyed, but the God's honest truth is I work on one movie at a time. I'm only capable of doing that, so my head will continue to be firmly in ['Inception'] for another few months."
There are some things, though, that Nolan can confirm. "My brother is working on the screenplay. We came up with a story that we are very excited about. We particularly like where we are taking the characters and what the ending is... There are things for me to be very excited about in addressing the characters again. But ultimately it always comes down to the script, and can we make a great film from this? That's something I will firmly be turning my attention to figuring out fairly soon." It will be, he said, "the finishing of a story rather than infintely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story."
Empire asked whether the villain could be a returning (and recast) Joker. "No," said Nolan resisting to elaborate, "I just don't feel comfortable about it."
Nolan reiterated that you won't be seeing a Batman/Superman crossover in his movies. "Marvel are doing what they do and people will respond to that really well, or they won't," said Nolan. "It's not something I ever really applied a blanket rule to, but Marvel characters are very different to DC characters, and the key DC characters are very different to the minor DC characters. You've got to go back to that element of, 'What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Batman? What do I see when I close my eyes and think of Supermabn?' And for me a big part of that is their individuality. The yare extraordinary beings in an ordinary world. And the reason I think the two are fascinating is because Superman is very specifically superpowered and obviously otherworldly; Batman is very human and flawed. They're two very different characters, but there's an elemental feeling of power in the iconography of those characters. To me that's originally because they stood alone. I need to hang on to that in my imagining of them."

Batman 3 to Include the Riddler, the Penguin, and Catwoman?
Actor Morgan Freeman recently spoke with MTV Splash Page, where he indicated that there may be more than one villain in the highly-anticipated sequel Batman 3. Here's an excerpt from the site's article:
"There's been talk of the Riddler, the Joker - I don't mean the Joker - the Penguin. Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin, and that sounds interesting to me. So we'll wait and see. And there just may be more than one."
Morgan Freeman also mentioned Catwoman and referenced, "The Freezer," as in Mr. Freeze, who was previously portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin. He also said, however, that Catwoman and Mr. Freeze might not be the main villains chosen for Batman 3.
We also reported last month that Batman 3 would start shooting in May, news which was confirmed by Morgan Freeman:
"No I don't really know anything at all. I've heard what you've heard. Spring."
Batman 3 comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Tom Hardy Reteaming with Nolan for Batman
Deadline is reporting that Tom Hardy is reuniting with Inception helmer Christopher Nolan for the untitled third Batman movie. "Insiders are keeping the role secret and won't even say if he's up for a villain role, but that seems a reasonable assumption," says the site. Hardy stars in the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Warrior. He is currently filming This Means War and has Mad Max: Fury Road on his plate as well.
