'20th Century Fox' gab heute die offizielle Ankündigung heraus, dass der Filmemacher James Cameron nach langer Suche rund um den Globus nun seine beiden Hauptdarsteller für das Science-Fiction Projekt Avatar gecastet hat! So werden die beiden Darsteller Sam Worthington ("Hart's War") und Zoe Saldana ("Fluch der Karibik") ab April am Set des Films vor den Kameras stehen. Sie haben Verträge für eine mögliche Fortsetzung unterschrieben, da Cameron in dem Projekt auch eine Basis für ein mögliches Franchise sieht. Die Bekanntgabe von weiteren involvierten Schauspielern soll in Kürze folgen.
Der Regisseur zum Film: "Für mich, als ein lebenslanger Fan von Science Fiction und Action ist 'Avatar' ein Traumprojekt. Wir erschaffen eine ganze Welt, ein komplettes Ökosystem von traumhaften Pflanzen und Kreaturen, und Ureinwohnern mit einer reichen Kultur und Sprache. Die Geschichte ist sowohl episch als auch emotional. Die zwei Dinge, die den Film überhaupt möglich machen sind die bahnbrechenden Fortschritte der CG-Effekte und Performance-Capture, sowie meine 22-jährige Arbeitsbeziehung mit Fox, da man nur mit großem Vertrauen so sehr am neuesten Technik-Stand arbeiten kann. Ich will diese Beziehung ehren, indem ich für sie einen Gewinnerfilm abliefere. Und ich habe das Team um das zu tun, das beste Team von Künstlern und Technikern, mit denen ich jemals das Privileg hatte zu arbeiten. Es wird ein großartiges Abenteuer."

Die Geschichte des Sci-Fi Thrillers spielt in ferner Zukunft. Jake, ein gelähmter Kriegsveteran, wird auf den Planeten Pandora gebracht. Dieser wird von den Na'vi bewohnt, einer humanoiden Rasse mit eigener Kultur und Sprache. Die Erdbewohner liegen auf dem Planeten im Clinch miteinander und den Heimatbewohnern.
Das Lightstorm Entertainment-Team von James Cameron hat mit der Erforschung einer innovativen Mischung aus Live-Action-Aufnahmen und photorealistischen CGI-Effekten, die virtuelle Charaktere für eine Veröffentlichung in einem neuen 3-D-Format enthalten, Jahre verbracht. Peter Jacksons neuseeländische Effektschmiede Weta Digital ("Der Herr der Ringe") wird die Umgebungen und die Charaktere in 3-D Bilder umwandeln.
Der Kinostart von Avatar ist für Sommer 2009 vorgesehen!

Latino Review berichtet das der altbewährte Schauspieler Michael Biehn zu dem Cast zu James Camerons kommenden Sci-Fi-Blockbusters Avatar (vormals Projekt 880) dazu stösst. Dies wäre somit nach "Terminator", "Aliens" und "Abyss" die vierte Zusammenarbeit von Biehn und Cameron. Über seine Rolle im Detail ist noch nicht viel bekannt. In den beiden Hauptrollen werden Sam Worthington ("Hart's War") und Zoe Saldana ("Fluch der Karibik") spielen.

James Cameron Reveals Avatar Cast
James Cameron chatted with Ain't It Cool News on his way back from shooting three days of live action work in Kauai for Avatar. In the conversation, he confirmed more members of the cast:
WES STUDI, SIGOURNEY WEAVER (confirmed as Grace), Peter Mensah, Joel David Moore (fantastic in both HATCHET and SPIRAL) - I imagine him as being Hippy-esque (think ABYSS), C.C.H. Pounder (love her) and then last but not least... I believe it was Laz Alonso - looking at his filmography - that's the name that most fits with what I heard.
Cameron will now begin a stage of the production called Pre-Capture with stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. You can read more on Cameron's comments here.

TIME Watches Footage From Cameron's Avatar
TIME magazine has published a new article talking about upcoming 3-D movie projects and the writer of the piece, Josh Quittner, got a chance to see footage from James Cameron's highly-anticipated Avatar, which 20th Century Fox will release on December 18. The sci-fi action-adventure stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald.
Here are a few excerpts from the article:
More than a thousand people have worked on it, at a cost in excess of $300 million, and it represents digital filmmaking's bleeding edge. Cameron wrote the treatment for it in 1995 as a way to push his digital-production company to its limits. The movie pioneers two unrelated technologies--e-motion capture, which uses images from tiny cameras rigged to actors' heads to replicate their expressions, and digital 3-D.
The film is set in the future, and most of the action takes place on a mythical planet, Pandora. The actors work in an empty studio; Pandora's lush jungle-aquatic environment is computer-generated in New Zealand by Jackson's special-effects company, Weta Digital, and added later.
I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated--even knowing that the 9-ft.-tall blue, dappled dude couldn't possibly be real. The scenes were so startling and absorbing that the following morning, I had the peculiar sensation of wanting to return there, as if Pandora were real.

Could Avatar Be the First of a Trilogy?
It seems there could be a whole series coming out of a future blockbuster. Collider spoke with actor Laz Alonso who revealed that the upcoming film Avatar could be the first part of a trilogy of films.
The script was so guarded under lock and key that he is sworn to secrecy on plot, but he did let it slip that he was glad "to have the opportunity to be a part of this trilogy".
He also revealed that some of the scenes of the film were, "filmed by 197 cameras, simultaneously, in real time."

Soderbergh Gives Avatar High Praise
Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a rare opportunity for an extended interview with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh for his upcoming film The Girlfriend Experience, a timely film about a high-priced Manhattan escort played by adult video star Sasha Grey.
We had a chance to talk to Soderbergh at length about the film as well as his next two studio projects, The Informant and Moneyball, which reunite him with Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, respectively, but the real surprise came at the end of our conversation.
We were asking why he thought recent films didn't have quite the impact or longevity as the classics, and he gave us a great response about how the volume of movies being made and seen made it hard for anything to have the cultural impact of a movie like The Godfather or be remembered. He was disappointed there weren't those sorts of benchmarks in the movies being made today, but he surprised us by adding that he thought James Cameron's Avatar would be one of those benchmarks:
"I've seen some stuff and holy sh*t. It's the craziest sh*t ever. That could negate everything I just said," he told us.
A lot of people are eagerly anticipating the film, being that it's Cameron's first narrative feature film since Titanic way back in 1997, but nothing has been seen of the movie beyond a poster and a brief report from TIME last month. To have a reputable and discerning filmmaker like Soderbergh give it such high praise certainly makes one optimistic that Cameron's return will be the stuff of cinematic legend.

Auf der Cinema Expo in Amsterdam wurden Szenen aus dem Film gezeigt und die
ersten Reaktionen sind sehr gut. Ich hoffe nur das endlich mal ein Teaser kommt
damit man sich auch selbst ein Bild davon machen kann.

I've just returned from a preview screening of James Cameron's hugely anticipated movie "Avatar" at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam and I'm still feeling the after effects of this jaw-dropping experience. First off, I'm really not a fan of the so called 3-D craze, that's currently taking Hollywood by storm. Before the "Avatar" screening, Fox showed us "Ice Age 3" in 3-D and although the movie is pretty entertaining, I don't understand why it has to be in 3-D. What is the added benefit? I just got a headache from the whole experience. For some reason or another, my eyes just can't get used to the 3-D experience. With it comes the fact that 3-D until now has been used as a gimmick.
Would "Avatar" change my mind? With anticipation I directed my attention to the 20th Century Fox show reel. After some pretty disappointing clips from other movies like "Gulliver's Travels" you could feel the tension in the theater. Then it appeared on the screen: AVATAR. After a brief introduction from cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, we were asked to put on the 3-D glasses (really uncomfortable, especially if you already wear a pair). Most of the scenes were from the first half of the movie.
In the first scene we see Sam Worthington's crippled ex-marine Jake Sully, who just arrived on the planet 'Pandora.' He's in a wheelchair and just rolled in to hear Colonel Quaritch, played by the impressive Stephen Lang, talk to the troops. He's giving a classic speech that every military leader gives at the beginning of a battle. Jake listens as an outsider to this speech. A melancholic smile appears on his face. Although the scene is in 3-D, I haven't really noticed it. Finally a director who doesn't feel the need to stick it in the audience's face with cheap tricks like pointing objects at the camera.
In the second scene Sigourney Weaver's Dr. Grace Augustine explains to Jake how the process of transporting your mind into an Avatar works. Although the scene is mostly exposition, we've got a good look at the lab and more importantly we get a first glimpse of the Avatars, the Na'Vi lookalikes. These tall blue creatures lie in water tanks, waiting for their human to 'jump' in their bodies. Besides Weaver and Worthington, the scene introduces Joel Moore's character Norm Spellman. As is usually the case with Moore, his character is the comic relief.
It's the third scene where my heart begins to pound like crazy. Jake and Norm will inhabit their Avatar for the first time. They enter some sort of capsule and - flash – their mind enters the blue creatures, now lying on hospital tables. And not before long Avatar Jake wakes up. And it took my breath away. I thought--just like you guys--that I've seen it all with Gollum, or The Hulk, but Cameron has done it again. These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you're watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul.
In the fourth scene the Avatars of Jake, Norm and Grace explore the jungle of Pandora. The surroundings remind me of a planet that appears briefly in "Revenge of the Sith." A lot of massive colorful flowers and plants grow everywhere. Jake's unbridled enthusiasm works on Grace's nerves. And not before long they have their first confrontation with some creatures. Some sort of rhino with a flower sticking out of his head looks like he will kill Jake, but he's not scared and he let's out a scream. The 'rhino' runs away, but not because of Jake. A more dangerous creature – a wolf? – jumps at Jake from behind.
In the next couple of scenes Jake meets Na'Vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Jake finds himself alone at night in the jungle with only a torch as protection against some evil looking dogs. Eager to fight them, Jake says: 'What are you waiting for?' When one of the 'dogs' attacks him he slams the torch in the creature's face. A fight ensues that Jake can't win by himself. Lucky for him, there's Neytiri who with her trusty bow and arrow helps Jake chase away the creatures. Just when Jake wants to offer his gratitude, Neytiri knocks his reached out hand away and says to Jake that killing these creatures is a bad thing. When the scene fades out to black, my mind begins to work overtime. How the hell is it possible that I never once felt like I've been watching a movie where almost everything comes out of a computer?
The most beautiful scene follows directly after the one I've described above. When Jake wants to take his torch with him, Neytiri takes it from him and throws it in the river. Like magic the flowers and plants – even the grassy soil - begin to glow in the night. The beauty completely takes my breath away. Meanwhile we get to learn more about Neytiri and her people. Everybody who knows the story of Native American Pocahontas and John Smith, will recognize a lot of similarities. Before you can sing "Colors of the Wind," Neytiri guides Jake through her world. Mysterious flowing and glowing seeds from a mystic tree appear out of nowhere. To Neytiri's surprise Jake attracts them. She has a look in her eyes like he's the 'chosen one.' And of course she's right. Jake has to lead the Na'Vi into battle against the massive army of Colonel Quaritch.
In the next scene we meet the Banshees. The Na'Vi ride these fierce looking creatures when they hunt. After some exposition, where Neytiri explains to Jake that a Banshee first has to respect you, before you can ride it, she takes flight and another gorgeous scene unspools.
The last scene wasn't completed. What we saw, was sort of a video-game version of the mother of all battles. Countless numbers of Na'Vi riding their Banshees attack Quaritch's fleet. I can't wait to see the battle fully rendered.
Overall I was really impressed by what I saw. The effects are in a league of their own. After some disappointing or even pointless 3-D movies, "Avatar" maybe the first movie where 3-D is properly utilized.
