'Avatar' running time set at 2.5 hours
How long is it?
That is the question about James Cameron's "Avatar," the science-fiction epic opening Dec. 18 that has been hotly debated for months, with rampant speculation that it would run over three hours.
In fact, it will be well under that, at least in part to meet limits imposed by Imax technology.
The actual running time will be 150 minutes, which is two and a half hours, according to Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, which is handling the release of the movie. He said that may rise to 156 minutes when all of the credits are added on, but that would be the maximum running time.
That will allow for two showings each evening at theaters, most likely at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. That would also mean about three daytime showings, beginning at 10 a.m., for a total of five shows a day in each auditorium. Typically a theater operator needs half an hour between shows with the lights up to move people out and get the auditorium cleaned, and then another 20 minutes with the lights down for trailers, in-theater advertising and other promotions and announcements.
"Avatar" will start with midnight screenings and play around the clock at first, but that is expected to be the case only for the first few days, after which it will play a normal pattern of runs.
It is unclear exactly how many theaters "Avatar" will open in, but Snyder estimates it will play in 3D in about 2,500 locations on about 3,500 screens. It will also be available in about 1,500 other locations in 2D, where it could play multiple screens in each theater complex. That would indicate an opening on a minimum of 5,500 screens and possibly significantly more, and that's just in the U.S. It will also open in theaters in countries around the world.
There have been stories circulated that "Avatar" would run over three hours, which is understandable because Cameron movies have run long in the past. His last narrative feature was "Titanic" in 1997, which ran 194 minutes, or three hours and 14 minutes.
Cameron has said that one of the constraints on his decision about running time was the Imax runs. "Avatar" will open day-and-date in 3D in about 180 domestic Imax theaters (which is included in the 2,500 locations) and several dozen more internationally. In those theaters that are not yet converted to digital projection, they are limited to two of the giant platters that hold the film, which caps the length of a movie using the system at 170 minutes, which thus became the maximum length that Cameron was willing to let "Avatar" run. In fact, he came in well under that with his final edit.
Imax has not scheduled another movie into its circuit until the first week of March, in anticipation of a historically long run for "Avatar." Most movies play about three weeks in Imax. If it is as successful as anticipated, "Avatar" is expected to play for about ten weeks. That would break the record for an Imax run set last year by "Dark Knight," which ran for 10 weeks.
Domestic movie theaters are expected to commit to an eight-week initial run for "Avatar," but ultimately that will depend on its performance. If it is disappointing, that could be cut short, and if it becomes as popular as "Titanic" was in its time, it could play even longer. Snyder would not comment on the terms being asked, but Fox is understood to be seeking "premium" terms from exhibitors for what is one of the most highly anticipated movies in years.
Fox has confirmed that the movie cost at least $230 million to make, but there have been reports it is much more than that. Fox is also expected to spend as much as $100 million to advertise, market and promote "Avatar" around the world, and through partnerships with Panasonic (which is using it to launch its new line of 3D TV sets) and licensees like Mattell (toys) and Ubisoft video games, which will pour on millions more in ancillary marketing.

'Avatar': A Race to the Finish
Crews are speeding to complete James Cameron's ambitious sci-fi tale on schedule
Less than a month before the scheduled release of James Cameron's new movie, "Avatar," some scenes from the costly special-effects extravaganza remain unfinished.
Pressure to complete the project by the Dec. 18 release date has risen to the point where crews are working "24-8"—that is, eight days a week—said producer Jon Landau during a break from supervising the work in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Mr. Landau said that around 30 minutes of the movie remain incomplete, with issues ranging from sound mixing to more serious aspects like visual effects. The total running time is likely to fall between 2½ hours and two hours 40 minutes, not including credits.
The film is an ambitious science-fiction tale about a disabled soldier who leaves Earth for a planet called Pandora. There, using mind-projection technology, the soldier lives and fights vicariously through a blue, 10-foot-tall body, or avatar, that closely resembles those of an indigenous humanoid species. Lest that futuristic scenario scare off anyone but die-hard sci-fi fans, there's a love story involving the avatar and a native female.
"It's in the hectic last days of postproduction typical of any film of this size, but it's on schedule and preparing for its world-wide release," said Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairman Jim Gianopulos.
Some of the tasks still facing the filmmakers are typical postproduction work such as scoring and "color timing," or ensuring that hues are consistent through the film. But other aspects include more basic production elements, such as special effects being generated by Weta Digital in New Zealand, the effects studio of "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson, plus seven other effects houses.
The eleventh-hour fixes are driving up costs on a project already on track to be one of the most expensive movies ever made. Several factors make the final price tag difficult to estimate, though people with knowledge of the movie's financing say the tally could exceed $300 million.
Since "Avatar" still isn't finished, the cost is growing daily. However, a 15% tax credit from the government of New Zealand is likely to soften the blow to Twentieth Century Fox and the film's other two financial backers, which took on about 60% of the production's cost. Fox is owned by News Corp., also the parent of The Wall Street Journal.
On a film like "Avatar," which is almost entirely computer-generated, Mr. Landau said, there is little meaningful difference between principal photography and special effects. The movie uses motion-capture technology, in which actors' images are loaded into computers, then manipulated and recreated using graphics software.
The process of creating Pandora and its denizens is laborious and largely untried, thanks to the new technology. Actors were filmed against green screens, their movements used as the basis for characters that in some cases were entirely computer generated. The imagery—which includes dense, exotic flora and fauna on the fictitious planet—is largely created by Weta. It is then zapped back to Mr. Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment in California, where the director must approve (or not) every shot.
"It's a benefit to the consumer when studios go crazy and spend a lot of money," Mr. Cameron said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in August. Mr. Cameron couldn't be reached Thursday.
As the release date approaches, the process is getting more intense. Once the core visual elements are set, picture and sound must be locked. Theaters that display the film in 3-D can project the movie based on a digital file, but prints must be produced for theaters that still rely on traditional film projectors.
It is common for work to go down to the wire on big-budget blockbusters. But Mr. Landau said that Mr. Cameron's already-exacting standards have continued to rise even as the film comes down to the wire.
"Every shot we get back raises the standard for what follows," Mr. Landau said.
Mr. Cameron is famous for pushing the envelope when it comes to both production schedules and costs. Sometimes that process has led to expensive disasters: 1989's "The Abyss" cost an estimated $70 million to make and grossed $54 million at the domestic box office. After a similar white-knuckle production process, however, "Titanic" became the highest-grossing film of all time.
"Avatar" relies on 3-D technology developed specifically for the film, similar to the way "Titanic" used a giant water tank in Mexico built just for that movie's scale model of the eponymous ship.
Mr. Cameron said in the August interview that, whatever the movie ends up costing, he is putting Fox's money at less risk this time than it was on "Titanic" or other big, costly productions shot using traditional filmmaking techniques, because most of the work is done inside a computer rather than with elaborate sets and exotic locations. Mr. Cameron and a business partner also covered some of those costs out of their own pockets, according to a person close to the studio. And as with "Titanic," Mr. Cameron argued that the cost of developing that technology doesn't belong on the film's own books, since it can theoretically be used for other movies in the future.
"At least that was how I pitched it to Fox," Mr. Cameron said in the August interview.

Sam Worthington Has Signed On For Two More AVATAR Sequels
Well we knew it was in the works, but it appears that Sam Worthington has committed himself to two more AVATAR sequels!
Worthington told Total Film: "You work 18-hour days. I was on it for 14 months. Jim's (Cameron) still editing. We'll still be filming it up to the day it's released -- probably after the movie comes out, knowing Jim! That commitment is what makes him the man he is. It's life or death. It's war. That's how he approaches movies... "We're signed for a trilogy. But I think I'll be 94 by the time it finishes, to be honest. I know Jim's got some ideas in his big head."
Great to hear something more substantial about this! Where does this place BATTLE ANGEL and THE DIVE in the directing queue for Cameron? Anybody's guess. Obviously box office will play a huge role too. Guess Jake lives through all Pandora throws at him eh? :-)
Note that he said "WE'VE signed for a trilogy". Does that mean the core group of AVATAR talent, or merely his personal team? Hmmm... More where we get it!

In zahlreichen Kinos

'AVATAR' OPENS TO $232M WORLDWIDE
20th Century Fox just announced that its big budget 3D Avatar grossed $159.18M internationally from 106 territories (the six territories that have not opened are Japan, China, Italy, Poland, Argentina, and Uruguay). With North America's slow-slowed grosses of $73M, that's a worldwide total of $232.18M which the studio says is the "highest original content (non-sequel, non-franchise) opening weekend ever".
Even with depressed U.S. grosses because of massive snowstorms in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC, 20th Century Fox told me "we are having a tremendous Saturday" as Avatar finished -5% compared to Friday. That puts the technopic at $27M Friday and $25.6M for Saturday. With $20M estimated for Sunday, it's officially a $73M pre-Xmas domestic opening weekend. It's the best-ever debut for director James Cameron, best-ever opening for a 3D movie with IMAX shattering their records and selling out every seat and adding shows to keep up with demand. It's also the 2nd best December debut of all time because of Avatar's 3D ticket price premium compared to 2D films. (No. 1 is still 2007's I Am Legend at $77,211,321, and No. 3 is now 2003's The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King at $72,629,713.)
Avatar is playing in 3,542 total theaters in North America with 3D presentations at 2,038 sites accounting for almost 60% of the grosses. (Those 2,038 3D locations break down into 3,129 3D screens and 179 all 3D IMAX.) Overseas, it's playing in 17,222 screens (including a total 3D/3D Imax screens of 5,360, and a total IMAX 3D screens of 81). Fox just announced Avatar made a whopping $159.18 internationally for a worldwide weekend total of $232.1 million -- more than 2012's hefty $225M 5-day debut number because of Avatar's higher 3D ticket prices.
"Can't wait for the East Coast snow to clear," one upbeat Fox exec tells me about studio hopes for the tentpole to have legs because of "the tremendous word of mouth".
