The Final Word: 'Avatar' Comic Con Footage
Though we're only on day two of Comic Con, the biggest (and most talked-about) event has already taken place. Yesterday afternoon James Cameron arrived in San Diego and screened roughly 25 minutes of footage from his much buzzed-about sci-fi flick Avatar. Until this point we've seen various behind-the-scenes images and heard rumors of brilliance from those who've managed to see the tiny bit of footage Cameron's already screened for theater owners. But now that the press and fans have had a chance to watch, would the reaction be the same? Is Avatar really going to revolutionize the way we watch movies? Is it truly the event film of the decade? Or is it just another CG 3D flick that looks pretty cool, but doesn't do much in the way of changing the scope and landscape of film as we know it?
Here's a roundup of what's been said around the web:
-- "Cameron proves again that he can combine high-octane thrills with human drama, creating palpable emotional depth both for and between the characters even as he subjects them to physical derring-do that otherwise seems impossible." -- Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical
-- "This is an evolutionary jump, not a revolutionary leap. I didn't experience movies in a whole new way, and nothing I saw on screen left me feeling more than impressed. What the movie represents is someone putting real money into the current CGI and mocap tech and shoving it an extra step forward." -- Devin Faraci, CHUD.com
-- "What I saw were glimpses at a fantastic bit of storytelling, a rich fantasy tale, by a master of the artform, but the CGI creatures and characters are just that. They're amazingly executed, no doubt, but it's not like when you saw your first CG dinosaur and you said, "This is a game changer" to yourself." -- Quint, AICN
-- "25 minutes of Avatar in 3D played, and it surpassed all expectations and anything the guy who gave us Terminator 2 has ever done. What Cameron has done with CGI and performance capture, and making it look photo-real in 3D, is akin to what Miyazaki has done with animation." -- Phil Pirrello, IGN
-- "Basically, today James Cameron walked into a room with 6,000 people and pulled out his dick and slapped it on the table. With an HD camera pointing right at it ... Avatar is really, really, really, really cool. It is not photoreal." -- Drew McWeeney, HitFix
-- "Sorry, folks, but while the most fully realized and wholly immersive CGI achievement in cinematic history probably won't cure peptic ulcers or reverse male-pattern-baldness, it will definitely make you go "whoa" more times than Keanu Reeves on his first visit to the Long Beach Aquarium." -- Seth Abramovitch, Movieline
Remember, you can see 15 minutes of Avatar for yourself for free on August 21 in IMAX theaters worldwide. Avatar hits theaters on December 18.

Avatar Teaser Trailer Breaks Apple Record
20th Century Fox announced today that the teaser trailer for James Cameron's Avatar received 4 million streams in its first day on Apple.com, shattering the previous record of 1.7 million:
Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the AVATAR teaser trailer has become the most-viewed trailer ever on the popular iTunes Movies Trailer section of apple.com, which Thursday hosted the long-awaited public first look at writer-director James Cameron’s motion picture epic. The teaser registered over four million streams in its first day on the site, shattering the previous record of 1.7 million.
On Friday, the trailer arrived in theaters around the world, presented in all formats, including IMAX® 3-D, IMAX® 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D.
The record–shattering online trailer debut marked the launch of AVATAR DAY, an unprecedented experience that also saw the unveiling of special scenes – in 3-D – prepared especially by Cameron for this event. The extended look at AVATAR unspooled for two showings only Friday evening. The U.S. showings were held in select IMAX® 3-D theaters, and international unveilings were in select digital 3-D and IMAX® 3-D theaters. Reservations for all showings were completely booked.
In addition, Fox took the wraps off its special “3-D”/lenticular one-sheet posters for the film, Ubisoft® unveiled the trailer for their videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel revealed the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters.
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere December 18, 2009.

New Cameron Interview: Avatar Edit "100% Done"
The Phillipine Daily Inquirer has a great interview with James Cameron that includes some updates on the status of Avatar.
Interestingly, he says that the edit is now 100% done. During the Comic-Con roundtable interview he mentioned that they were still cutting, and that he would take the Hall H reactions into account while finishing the edit. I would love to know if he did indeed incorporate any of the feedback, and if he did, what he changed - especially since he said that the Comic-Con sequences themselves would "probably not change."
“In the most important respects as a director, I’m 100 percent done because the film is shot and edited,” the silver-haired auteur replied when we asked what he still needs to do between now and December. “My job for the next few months until we deliver at the end of November is more as a visual effects person, working to make sure that the shots look real, that they’re all up to an even standard.”
Cameron says that he is working 14 to 16 hour days making sure the VFX shots are all up to an even standard of photorealism. That leaves 3 entire months dedicated to perfecting the VFX before the final cut is delivered at the "end of November." And, I would guess, to finish the music, sound mix, color timing, and other finishing touches. I'm very curious to hear more about James Horner's score - I find it strange that no one has asked Cameron or Landau about Avatar's music yet, given the iconic scores Horner composed for Aliens and Titanic.
Another interesting anecdote from the article:
On Avatars having tails, James smiled and said, “The studio asked me the same question. They asked, ‘Do they have to have tails?’ We’re very happy with the way the Na’vi worked out because what we found is the tail and the ears show the characters’ emotional state. A cat owner knows that you can tell a cat’s mood by what its tail is doing. Just as we created a verbal language, we created a vocabulary for the tail and the ears.”
It makes me giddy that we are about to see 2 and a half plus hours of pure, unadulterated, un-studio-tinkered James Cameron sci-fi in brain-altering 3D. It only occurs a few times a century that a new cinematic universe is created from the ground up where the filmmaker has the budget and support to truly melt audiences' minds with something never seen before. The inclusion of the tails (and animation thereof) are emblematic of the unabashed creativity and technological ingenuity we will be experiencing this December.

Synopsis

3 Minute and 30 Second Avatar Trailer Coming!
ComingSoon.net has confirmed that 20th Century Fox will debut a new trailer for James Cameron's Avatar in theaters this Friday, October 23rd! The trailer, which clocks in at roughly around 3 minutes and 30 seconds, won't be coming online until October 29th. You should really see this in theaters anyways as we've learned that this is THE trailer, the one that will show you much more story (as opposed to the teaser trailer previously released).
Opening in conventional 3D theaters and IMAX 3D on December 18th, the live action movie with a new generation of special effects stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald.
Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.
