Inside Jessica Alba's Tour to Africa
"Our one goal is to make sure that every child has access to an education,"
Jessica Alba says of her March visit to Ghana, Senegal and Johannesburg
with the 1GOAL: Education for All campaign, which aims to provide basic
schooling to children around the world.
"After I had my daughter [Honor, 1½] everything got put into a completely
different perspective," says Alba, who joins Bono during a tour of Ghana's Osu
Presby Cluster School. Enrollment there has increased "dramatically" because
of initiatives to provide free school uniforms and free lunches, according to Alba.
As U.S. co-chair of 1Goal, Alba addresses the students of Osu. "This is really a
chance for us to make sure that every child gets an education," Alba said. "72
million children in the world don't have access to an education."
Alba sheds her movie-star glamour to hit the field with Osu students and leading
African soccer players. "You can’t go anywhere in Africa without seeing kids
playing the sport," she writes. "The excitement for the first-ever World Cup in
Africa this summer is everywhere."
Hopping over to Johannesburg, South Africa – host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup –
Alba speaks to students in Soweto Township. "I met children who work to support
their families but dream of going to school," she says, "and families who told me
that providing an education for their children is their only way to beat poverty."
Cash Warren joins his wife on a humanitarian visit to Ghana's Tema General
Hospital, where the couple spoke with women and children in the village.
"If there's any way I can contribute to giving a voice to women and children so
they can have more opportunities and a better chance at life, I will," says Alba,
who listens to mothers at a community meeting in Tema. Next up: Teaming up
with Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) in Washington, D.C., for landmark legislation to
help achieve universal education around the world.

April 22, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, so it was fitting that it was also the day that the environmentalist documentary "Climate of Change" had its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Narrated by Tilda Swinton, "Climate of Change" features interviews with several people around the world who voice their thoughts on how the environment is affecting them and what they think should be done to improve their environment.
After the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of "Climate of Change" (the event was held at the SVA Theater in New York City), Jessica Alba participated in a question-and-answer session as part of the festival’s "Tribeca Talks: After the Movie" discussions. Alba does not appear in "Climate of Change," but she is a high-profile advocate of environmentalism, and she is an honorary U.S. co-chair of the global education campaign 1GOAL. (Alba’s film "The Killer Inside Me" makes its New York premiere at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.) Here is what Alba had to say at the "Climate of Change" Q&A session.
You were on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., yesterday [April 21, 2010] talking about 1GOAL. Can you tell us more about 1GOAL?
I was invited by Queen Rania of Jordan to participate in this campaign to basically put pressure on world leaders to make sure every child has access to education … It’s the most sustainable, real way to fight poverty for a child: to have a primary-school education. There are all these insane stats …
[It’s about] people lending their voice. Government won’t choose to make a change or make a difference unless people stand up for something, and so our campaign is to sign up and put pressure on the world leaders and force them to make a change. And so, along those lines, what we’re trying to do is educate the public.
How was it being on Capitol Hill?
Intense. Politicians are grinding.
How do you use social media to encourage people to get involved in the causes that you advocate?
Well, I was on Capitol Hill yesterday, and I tweet. I tweeted out that I was there and what I was advocating, and asked people to sign up and get behind [1GOAL] so they’ll have followers. It’s really amazing the access that you have. We really are a global citizen now — and I feel like it’s real now more than ever — and using this film ["Climate of Change"] as one area, one entry point, but following it up with … a shorter, condensed version. What can you tweet out to get people engaged in 150 characters or less?
Like they said in the movie ["Climate of Change"]: "We’re the future; we’re the ones who are going to make a difference." [It’s about] engaging them and getting them excited behind their power, and knowing they can be a part of that and use in it in an amazing way to make sure that we stop global warming. We now have the consciousness and have we have access to all this information. It’s about engaging them on their level.
What do you do to make your daughter more educated and aware of being environmentally responsible?
I’m sort of obsessed with it, personally. I always have non-toxic cleaning products in my house. The only plastic she has is [from] my mom … I try to talk to my family about it. It’s tough for people to imagine that big companies and big corporations will produce things that are poisonous not only to their children but to the environment. And they feel like there’s nothing they can do, but actually you can read the label … and get behind companies that are doing the right thing. So that’s the way we live our life.

It was a not-so-fine kettle of fish at the trendy Smyth Hotel in TriBeCa when Jessica Alba tried cooking herself an early dinner.
Alba, in town for the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her new movie, "The Killer Inside Me," was attempting to heat up some fish sticks at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday -- but she couldn't figure out how to work the oven.
According to a source at the hotel, "She ended up almost causing a fire in her room. Fire alarms ended up going off throughout the hotel. The smoke was so bad that fire trucks had to come. The other guests in the hotel were pretty pissed."
But Alba's rep tells PEOPLE there was no fire. "They were preparing Honor's dinner," her rep, Brad Cafarelli, says. "[There was] no fire – just some smoke that unfortunately set off the alarm."
Later in the evening, Alba made quite a show of bidding husband Cash Warren a proper farewell before heading to Avenue for the premiere's after-party. "When the car door opened, she sat on his lap making out with him for a minute in front of paparazzi and fans," says another spy. "She only stopped when a friend pried her away."
Inside the club, Alba's co-star, Kate Hudson, was doing everything she could to downplay reports that she got breast implants. "She was wearing a baggy printed dress, and noticeably angled herself away from photographers," says our spy. "She briefly said hi to Jessica and [co-star] Casey Affleck before leaving in an oversized trench coat."
Alba Forced To Flee Hip Brooklyn Restaurant As Flood Disrupts Party
Actress Jessica Alba and friends were forced to flee to the safety of a frigid restaurant garden after a flood disrupted their dinner at Brooklyn hotspot Vinegar Hill House last night.
Jessica and ~10 pals were dining in a private downstairs room around 9PM when the restaurant's main drain clogged for the second time in the evening. The fabulous-looking party were quickly ushered upstairs and outside into the garden's unseasonably chilly (~50F) evening air. They made the best of it by taking pictures, smoking, and drinking (presumably heavily).
Vinegar Hill dinner service, meanwhile, slowed to a crawl as staff rushed around with drain snakes and explained to startled guests that dishwashing and toilet-flushing had to be severely curtailed.
The growing line of diners outside the bathroom were asked to please wait 4 minutes between flushes. Jessica was shown to a private bathroom in the wine-cellar building at the back of the garden.

Jessica Alba wins in sexy list race
It is list season. And while it might be list season every day for British pubgoers, they have new professional material to discuss, thanks to the country's FHM's list of 100 Sexiest Women, released April 29.
The ranking is again topped by singer Cheryl Cole and unexpectedly features Twilight star Kristen Stewart in sixth place (a new entry) as well as, more expectedly, supermodels Adriana Lima and Marisa Miller.
However, the only two sexy stars also named on the US edition of the list and the recently published Playboy ranking are actresses Megan Fox and Jessica Alba.
