Quote:
'Dark Angel' Jessica Alba has a rooting interest in James Cameron

Jessica Alba was his "Dark Angel" for two television seasons, so it's little surprise James Cameron is the Oscar nominee she's rooting loudest for.

"'Avatar' is incredible, just incredible," Alba tells Zap2it of filmmaker Cameron's box-office-shattering achievement, which has nine nominations including best picture in Sunday's (Mar. 7) 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

"I love what Jim is doing for the environment, just in what his movie says about taking care of and trying to save our planet. It's such a beautiful message."

Alba will do some good herself as a celebrity volunteer on the Sunday, Apr. 4 episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" on ABC.

She admires Cameron's use of his artistry to try to influence others, citing his "ability to create the most incredible world. That he can articulate that and put it on the screen is just amazing.

"There's nobody like him, and we're all blessed to have him be one of the best directors in our lifetime. He's creating a platform for others to tie social messages into entertainment."

"Fantastic Four" and "Sin City" alum Alba won't attend Sunday's Oscars ("I'm going to be traveling; I don't even know if I'll be able to see it on the plane"), but she admits she wouldn't be upset if Cameron's ex-wife took the best-director honors instead.

"I loved 'The Hurt Locker.' I thought Kathryn Bigelow did something really incredible, so she and Jim are my faves."

Jessica Alba in SA to support education

Image

It looks like Jessica Alba is doing her bit for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

She was in town on Monday to help support the 1 Goal initiative, which aims to ensure that education becomes a lasting effect of the football spectacular.

Alba tweeted that she was in the country to support the 1 Goal campaign and she told her fans she was inspired by a gumboot dance show she saw while in Alexandra.

She was also spotted meeting the Organising Committee’s Danny Jordaan.

The organisation said she was in Johannesburg as part of the campaign’s preparations for the world cup.

Alba is an ambassador for the 1 goal campaign, together with the likes of Kevin Spacey, Bono, Kelly Rowland, and footballers Matthew Booth and Mark Fish.

It's all about school for Alba

Hollywood starlet Jessica Alba may be known as a sex siren, but she has shown her serious side by encouraging children in Joburg's Alexandra township to go to school.

Image

Alba said: "I've had an incredible visit to South Africa, listening and learning about the fight for education for all and sharing in the excitement about the upcoming World Cup."

The 28-year-old was recently part of the star-studded cast of the comedyValentine's Day. In 2001 Maxim magazine rated her No1 on its Hot 100 list, which names the world's 100 most beautiful women.

But her visit to South Africa is a philanthropic one. Alba is a guest of 1Goal, a Fifa initiative that seeks to give all children access to education.

"Not only is this going to be a tournament to remember, the education summit President [Jacob] Zuma is planning will help to ensure that the lasting legacy of this World Cup will be education for every child," she said.

The Times caught up with the mother of a 20-month-old daughter, Honor, and her film-producer husband, Cash Warren, while on their visit. The couple arrived in a cream Land Rover without their baby girl, accompanied by six bodyguards and a camera crew.

The petite actress, dressed in navy skinny jeans, a white top and brown pumps, walked around smiling and chatting to the children on a soccer field in the impoverished township, while a local team was warming up for a soccer game.

Alba spoke to the children, who didn't seem to know who she was, saying: "It's very important to go to school, even though it's tough and expensive. Education is important, so you must all keep going to school."

Later, she encouraged followers on her Twitter page to join the effort: "Sign up to [1GOAL to] ensure every child has access to an education."

Alba was spotted outside Safa H ouse in Jo burg yesterday morning, before heading to Soweto to visit a school, along with local organising committee head Danny Jordaan.

She also visited a gum-boot dance studio, which she seemed to have enjoyed.

She tweeted : "I am so inspired by the Gumboot Dancing Studio in Alex township, and Jack who runs the programme. Thank you for the amazing performance."

Quote:
Jessica Alba on education for all

ONE just returned from a listening and learning trip to Senegal, Ghana, Mozambique and Kenya with members of our board and other supporters. Below, Jessica Alba talks about 1GOAL and the campaign to provide education to all children:

Image

I had an incredible week, joining the ONE team on the road in Senegal and Ghana as part of the 1GOAL: Education for All campaign to make the lasting legacy of the upcoming World Cup education for every child.

I’ve wanted to travel to Africa my whole life and when offered the opportunity to listen and learn alongside ONE, it was a once in a lifetime chance that I couldn’t pass up. I’ve always admired the work ONE has done and being able to see the programs you’ve contributed to firsthand was inspiring.

We met African entrepreneurs and academics, spoke with civil society and private sector leaders. We sat with street vendors at a microfinance project, heard from women now able to save their and their children’s lives through ARV HIV/AIDS treatment. We met some amazing people, a new generation of leaders for not only the continent, but for the world.

My goal in going on this trip was to listen closely and learn more about the fight against global poverty. And what I heard repeatedly was that as I’ve always believed, education has the power to lift individuals, communities and entire nations out of poverty. From a promising business idea to a woman pushing cultural boundaries to stand up and speak out, education has been the key.

Today, 72 million kids are out of school around the world, the majority of them girls. Without an education, they are almost certain to be trapped in a life of poverty and robbed of the knowledge of their basic human rights. Every year a child is out of school is a year they lose in literacy, in health, in opportunity.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Since 2000, because people like you and governments took action, 48 million more children are in school. And if we come together around this World Cup, we can do even more to put education front and center. Together with FIFA, leading players and fans around the world, we can use the power of this truly global game to ensure that education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We have a plan, we know how to beat this—all we need now is the will to make it happen.

Increased global education funding fights global poverty at the root, empowers girls and women, and promotes economic growth in poor countries around the world. And it’s a very smart investment: experts tell us that a girl will earn an additional 10% in income for every year of schooling she receives and be 50% less likely to become infected with HIV/AIDS. In Africa, children of mothers who receive five years of primary education are 40% more likely to live beyond the age of 5. It’s a proactive measure to avert many of the problems that plague developing countries.

We spent a day at Osu School in Accra, Ghana, where initiatives to provide free school uniforms and free lunch to students have dramatically increased enrollment. And they have one other policy with great results—requiring perfect attendance to play on the school’s soccer or “football” team! As a result of these programs, 71% of Ghanaian girls and 73% of Ghanaian boys go to school. Ghana’s President John Atta Mills has even signed up to 1GOAL, promising to provide free textbooks to every student.

At Osu, we met Stephen, an 18-year-old student with enormous talent. The Ghanaian Premiere League has already had their eye on this young goalkeeper for the past three years. The school’s headmaster has been keeping tabs on Stephen, constantly reminding him that you can’t be a good player without a good education. He stresses to Stephen that the only way he will know how to sustain the wealth and opportunities he will gain as a “footballer” (soccer player) is by having an education.

Stephen is an inspiring young man. He is the eldest of seven children and his family’s sole provider. He wakes early, goes to school, practices with his coaches in the afternoon and then goes to work at night as a busboy to support the family. On average he goes non-stop for 18 hours.

He told us that he now understands he cannot be a footballer or achieve his dreams without an education. Top teams are looking to recruit him. He dreams of playing for his national team, the Ghana Black Stars, and someday becoming a catcher for Chelsea.

You can’t go anywhere in Africa without seeing kids playing the sport. The excitement for the first-ever World Cup in Africa this summer is everywhere. The world’s eyes will be on the continent and it’s a moment for Africa to shine.

Jessica Alba to join judges on 'Project Runway'

Jessica Alba is bringing her celebrity fashion sense to "Project Runway."

Lifetime spokeswoman Kannie Yu LaPack says Alba will serve as a guest judge on Thursday's episode of the popular clothing-design competition show.

The 28-year-old actress will help judge a challenge in which the remaining six contestants must create an outfit for an "opinionated celebrity," who they will later discover is show host Heidi Klum.

Other guest judges this season have included Nicole Richie, Molly Sims and Lauren Hutton.

Jessica Alba lends a hand

Jessica Alba is no stranger to makeovers.

Now she knows more about them than ever, since the glamorous actress has expanded the definition to include the overhaul of a deserving family's residence. She's the celebrity volunteer joining Ty Pennington and his "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team of designers on the Sunday, April 4, episode of the ABC series.

"I'm a fan of the show," Alba says, "but I don't think (the producers) knew it. I think it's fantastic what they do for families, and I love the idea that people in communities all over our country support these families."

Benefiting from Alba, other volunteers and the "Extreme Makeover" regulars are Larry and Melissa Beach of Texas' Gulf Coast. Their home wrecked in 2008 by Hurricane Ike -- and their stored possessions ravaged by flooding -- they've lived since in a small trailer with their four sons and nine adopted youths. Many of the Beaches' adopted children are impaired mentally or emotionally.

"It's just incredible what this family has done, with the conditions they were living in," Alba says. "The fact that 15 people had to pack into this 30-foot trailer was unbelievable, and the mother and the father still had the wherewithal to donate their time and give back, even living that way."

Alba considers the Beaches symbolic of many families still struggling to recover from such crises as Ike and Hurricane Katrina. "When there's a natural disaster, it goes beyond the immediate destruction. We all see the before and after, and these people are still living with it years later. Tons of people are in homes that aren't really fit or healthy or safe for their children."

As braced as she thought she would be for the rebuilding, Alba ultimately got caught up in the emotion: "Just seeing the volunteers -- these thousands of people who have to put food on the table for their own families, and are struggling to make their own mortgage payments and keep their lives afloat -- take a week to help this other family, it was so moving to know there are people who have such a sense of community and social conscience."

Jessica the Next Angelina? Alba Announces Adoption Plans

During Jessica Alba's appearance on this Sunday's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, she annonces that she has plans for her own extreme home makeover—nursery edition.

While pitching in to help out a trailer-dwelling family of 13, Alba shared her desire to give little Honor Marie a sibling.

"My mom grew up around a huge family, and they always wanted more kids, and I was like, 'Why don't you just adopt?' " said Alba, who's making the reality rounds these days, having also popped up on last night's Project Runway.

"I'm totally inspired. If you have the love, and the capacity to love children, you should just adopt. And I plan on doing it."

Alas, there's no word yet when she will pull an Angelina.

Jessica Alba joins Tribeca panel

Jessica Alba is among the jurors announced for this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Other stars included on the panel of 35 filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, journalists and media figures are Aaron Eckhart, Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines, America Ferrera, Alicia Keys, Zach Braff, American Splendor's Hope Davis, Pleasantville director Gary Ross, Whoopi Goldberg and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tribeca festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal said: "This year's jury features the same impressive range and depth as our films playing in competition."

She continued: "They are distinctive and accomplished storytellers, artists and entrepreneurs from the worlds of film, theatre, culture, fashion, television and new media - all of whom share a passion for film, a thirst for discovery and a spirit of independence."

The 2010 festival runs from April 21 until May 2.

Winners in the world narrative, world documentary, New York narrative, New York documentary, narrative short and documentary and student short film categories will be announced at the awards night party on April 29.

Together, the six juries will award 130,000 dollars in cash and prizes, as well as a piece of original art to each winner as part of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards programme.

Jessica Alba copes with paparazzi

Jessica Alba won't complain about the paparazzi because it would make her seem like an "a*shole".

The 28-year-old actress does find it "awkward" to constantly be followed by photographers, but realises it's part of being a famous actress.

Jessica - who has a 22-month-old daughter Honor Marie with her husband Cash Warren - told Total Film magazine: "It is what it is. But if I don't leave the house, I don't go anywhere and there's no point in doing that. I'm a person! I think if you complain about it you seem like an a*shole. More of an a*shole than if you just go with it. It's not like you ever get used to it - it's like having sex with the camera in front of you - it's just awkward!"
