Filming on 'Killer' under way in Oklahoma
Filming in Guthrie, Okla., for the new film "The Killer Inside Me" is under way and actress Jessica Alba is due in the state within weeks, a producer says.
Producer Andrew Eaton said the first week of filming on the thriller in Guthrie concluded Saturday and within the next two weeks, Alba should join the cast to continue shooting the $10 million production, The Oklahoman (Oklahoma City) reported Sunday.
Eaton's fellow producer, Susan Kirr, said the cast and crew of the independent film was happen to return to Guthrie after filming in New Mexico.
"Our first four days of principal photography in New Mexico went well, but we are really glad to be back 'home' in Guthrie," Kirr said. "The town and the people here have been so welcoming to us."
The film, which stars actor Casey Affleck and actress Kate Hudson, is based on author Jim Thompson's 1952 paperback crime novel. The Oklahoman said in addition to filming in Guthrie, the movie production will shoot in Oklahoma City, Cordell, Enid and Tulsa.

Warmth greets ‘Killer’ crew
Work on movie transforms downtown Oklahoma City into 1950s Texas
On the spectator-crowded northwest corner of Park and Robinson avenues it was Oklahoma City 2009, but another place and time lay just across the intersection. One could tell by the Texas state flag hanging alongside the 48-starred version of Old Glory over the entrance of the First National Tower.
The old bank building was dressed up to be in a movie, and so were the people who moved along its sidewalks in ’50s vintage fedoras, wide-lapelled suits, long skirts and pillbox hats.
Eisenhower-era Chevys, Fords and Buicks rolled by in the streets of what, for a few hours on Saturday, was supposed to be downtown Fort Worth circa 1957.
The cast and crew of "The Killer Inside Me” had come to town after three weeks of shooting in Guthrie and were filming "general street scenes” of star Casey Affleck, dressed in a white cowboy hat and dark blue suit, walking among a crowd of "pedestrians” who were actually locally recruited extras.
"It’s the first chance we’ve had to give some real scale to the movie,” British producer Andrew Eaton said. "It’s the first time we’ve shot on streets of this size with all the extras.”
The $13 million crime thriller, directed by Michael Winterbottom and based on a 1952 pulp novel by Anadarko-born author Jim Thompson, has been filming at Oklahoma locations since May 18, with two and a half weeks still to go in Cordell, Tulsa and Enid.
"Oklahoma’s been fantastic; it’s been really great,” Eaton said. "The only problem we had was Casey Affleck, who injured his back picking up Jessica Alba. So we had to stop for four days because he’d pulled a muscle in his lower back.”
Alba, who co-stars with Affleck and Kate Hudson in the film, caused a stir last week for her involvement with a group that plastered shark conservation posters on electrical boxes, a bridge and a United Way billboard in downtown Oklahoma City. The actress publicly apologized but may face criminal charges of vandalism.
She was not on the movie set Saturday but is scheduled to return to the production in 10 days.
"She’s been keeping her head down a little bit for obvious reasons,” Eaton said.
Fellow producer Brad Schlei said another problem they found filming in Oklahoma was a shortage of experienced local crew members. Production companies filming here are required to hire a percentage of local crew to qualify for a state rebate program.
"The only real thing we had to overcome was having to get people from out of state sometimes to fill in for some of the lesser experienced crew in Oklahoma,” Schlei said. "But I’ve got to say, all of the Oklahoma crew have been totally professional and enthusiastic, and that’s awesome.”
Beyond those problems, Schlei said he was happy with his Oklahoma working experience and is considering the state as a setting for two more film projects, screen adaptations of A.M. Homes’ "Music for Torching” and Iceberg Slim’s "Mama Black Widow.”
"You guys have got ‘authentic.’ It’s a real American town,” Schlei said of Oklahoma City. "And the people make you feel that way, too. They make you feel wanted and accepted.”

Berlin film fest unveils star-packed line-up
New movies starring Ben Stiller, Julianne Moore, Gerard Depardieu, Jessica Alba and James Franco will headline the 60th Berlin International Film Festival next month, organisers said Wednesday.
Following the announcement of fresh releases by Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese at this year's event, the Berlinale said in a statement it had nearly completed the selection of 26 films for its main programme.
The 11-day festival, which kicks off February 11 with Chinese film-maker Wang Quan'an's "Apart Together" (Tuan Yuan), will also see the world premiere of "Greenberg" by US indie star Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale").
In it, Stiller leads a cast including Jennifer Jason Leigh and Rhys Ifans and plays a New Yorker who flees to Los Angeles to work through a life crisis.
Moore and Annette Benning star in Lisa Cholodenko's US-French production "The Kids Are Alright" about two children born as a result of artificial insemination who seek out their biological father.
Provocative British director Michael Winterbottom, a favourite on the festival circuit, will screen "The Killer Inside Me" with Alba, Casey Affleck, and Kate Hudson in the story of a Texas sheriff's dark secret.
Winterbottom clinched Berlin's coveted Golden Bear top prize in 2003 for his refugees drama "In This World". "The Killer Inside Me" will screen out of competition.
Depardieu is expected in the German capital for the world premiere of the competition film "Mammuth" by Benoit Delepine co-starring Isabelle Adjani.
Rob Epstein, director of the acclaimed 1984 documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk", will present the competition entry "Howl" starring Franco as the beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet and Rebecca Hall lead the cast of "Please Give" by US film-maker Nicole Holofcener ("Friends With Money") about real estate wars in New York. It will screen out of competition.
One of Europe's top two film festivals, the Berlinale is the only one to sell tickets to the public. Its Golden and Silver Bear top prizes will be awarded at a gala ceremony on February 20.
Polanski, who is awaiting possible extradition to the United States on charges of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl, has been completing the Berlin competition entry "The Ghost Writer" while under house arrest in Switzerland.
The picture's stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan are expected in Berlin alongside Leonardo DiCaprio with Scorsese's new thriller "Shutter Island" and Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan appearing in "My Name is Khan."

Audiences React to The Killer Inside Me
Filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) had two distinctly different films in the festival, but it wasn’t the one entitled The Shock Doctrine that drew the most polarizing reactions from festival goers. It was his dark, psycho-sexual thriller The Killer Inside Me, a character study of a small-town sheriff (Casey Affleck, who drew kudos, incidentally) who harbors a sinister secret. Critics in attendance reported on a number of mid-movie walkouts -- including one by co-star Jessica Alba -- due to the extremely violent content in the film, which is based on the 1952 noir novel by Jim Thompson. (For the record, we don’t know why Alba walked out.) Thompson on Hollywood’s Anne Thompson and Screen Crave’s Mali Elfman Tweeted from the scene of the lively Q&A that followed:
“Audience disturbed by shocking violent beating of women. One woman berates Sundance for booking it. Winterbottom moved by book.” – Anne Thompson, Thompson on Hollywood
“Crew on stage & lady yelled out ‘I can't believe Sundance approved this, it was dark unnecessary & horrible’ then people booed as she left.” – Mali Elfman, Screen Crave

Eine mit 9.5/10 Punkten mehr als positive Kritik gibt es bei joblo.com: Meanwhile, Alba acquits herself very nicely as the randy local prostitute, who`s drawn to the psychotic Ford through her own masochistic streak- perfect summed up in a widely circulated clip from the film where Affleck whips her with a leather belt. Alba`s excellent here, and proves that she`s more than the pretty face (and smokin`bod) she`s been pegged as over the last few years.

Rep Addresses Alba's Theatre Walk-out
A representative has brushed off speculation Jessica Alba is disgusted by her violent new movie The Killer Inside Me, after the actress was spotted walking out of its screening.
Alba plays a prostitute who is bludgeoned by a psychotic killer in the upcoming thriller, which has come under fire from critics for its excessive gore.
And the 28 year old sparked rumours that even she couldn't tolerate the bloody scenes after leaving a theatre halfway through a screening at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on Sunday.
But her spokesperson insists Alba only left the cinema to catch a plane.
Her rep Brad Cafarelli explains, "This rumour is silly and not accurate at all. Jessica had seen the final version of the film just prior to coming to Sundance and was pleased with the outcome. She came in to support the film and the filmmakers by introducing the screening, which she did, and left right after to get home to her family in L.A., as planned."

Es ist normal das die meisten Schauspieler sich gar nicht sehen möchten! Sie haben den Film in der Regel auch schon vor der Premiere gesehen! Aber schön, dass sie schonmal eine gute Kritik gekriegt hat! Mal sehen was die anderes sagen! Aber ja klar der Film wird in D bestimmt ab 18 sein! Habe ja schon das Plot gelesen! |

Winterbottom defends ultra-violent film at Berlin fest
The competition at the Berlin Film Festival wrapped up Friday with a thriller by Britain's Michael Winterbottom that drew a hostile reaction for its graphic and sexualised violence against women.
"The Killer Inside Me" stars Casey Affleck as psychopathic Texas sheriff Lou Ford who is torn between two women, played by Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson, in the screen adaptation of a 1952 pulp novel by Jim Thompson.
The low-budget neo-noir film, one of 20 pictures vying for the Golden Bear top prize to be awarded Saturday, met with boos at a packed press screening here for lingering on a number of grisly attacks.
Winterbottom, who won the Golden Bear in 2003 for his refugees drama "In This World", fielded more than a half-dozen angry questions on the brutal scenes at a news conference but insisted he was not going for cheap thrills.
"I think anyone watching the film and saying this in some way supports or encourages violence against women is just watching it in a very perverse way," he said.
Winterbottom said he had taken an unflinching look at violence intentionally, to make the audience squirm rather than to entertain it.
"I don't believe anyone could watch or read 'The Killer Inside Me' and think that Lou Ford is a role model, that Lou Ford was a glamorous character that you'd want to be like, that somehow beating up women was a good thing or a heroic thing. In the end he wants to destroy himself."
The 48-year-old Winterbottom is a favourite on the festival circuit for hard-hitting political films such as "A Mighty Heart" starring Angelina Jolie and "The Road to Guantanamo".
He said he had aimed to be as true as possible to the hard-boiled novel by Thompson, who later went on to write screenplays for Stanley Kubrick.
The picture was shot in Oklahoma and told from the warped perspective of the protagonist.
He is sent to tell the prostitute June (Alba) she has to leave town but when she resists and slaps him, he retaliates and both quickly find themselves aroused by the blood and bruises.
They start an affair that ends 20 minutes into the film in an stunning orgy of violence and gore. Many in the audience walked out, dozens of others covered their eyes in horror.
The story then introduces Ford's well-born girlfriend Amy (Hudson), who has a penchant for masochism perfectly suited to her lover's own tastes.
Meanwhile the bodies continue to pile up as suspicion finally centres on the young lawman.
Affleck, 34, had roles in his older brother Ben's films "Good Will Hunting" and "Gone Baby Gone" and was also a fixture in the "Ocean's Eleven" movies but Winterbottom noted he rarely appears as a leading man.
Winterbottom expressed disappointment that Affleck and his lead actresses had not accompanied him to Berlin as agreed ahead of the festival, noting that a small independent film needed their star power to make a splash.
Producer Andrew Easton denied news reports that Alba had skipped the event due to sharp criticism at last month's Sundance Film Festival, where the picture first screened.
"That story is not true," Easton said. "Jessica saw the film before the film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and she really liked it," he said, citing family obligations as the reason for her absence.
The 60th Berlin Film Festival, cinema's first major international showcase of the year, wraps up on Sunday.
