Verbinski Passes on Pirates to Helm BioShock
Variety is reporting that director Gore Verbinski, whose main claim to fame came from directing Disney's blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" action-adventure trilogy to gross $2.6 billion worldwide, has decided that three pirate movies is enough. He's informed Disney and producer Jerry Buckheimer that he won't be directing the fourth installment, which is currently scheduled to start shooting in 2010.
Verbinski told the trade: "I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."
Instead, Verbinski will focus on his adaptation of the bestselling video game BioShock for Universal Pictures, which is expected to start production in 2010 based on a script by John Logan.
Next up for Verbinski is the Paramount animated film Rango, also written by Logan, which is due for release on March 18, 2011. The filmmaker is also developing a new live action movie based on the Hasbro board game Clue, written by Steven Knight.

Bruckheimer Gives Update on Pirates
Earlier this week, there was a story from the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas posted on Jim Hill's Blog claiming that Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures had chosen a director to helm The Lone Ranger, which would star Johnny Depp as Tonto, and that the movie would push the planned Pirates of the Caribbean 4 back.
ComingSoon.net had a chance to catch up with Bruckheimer this week and ask him about the status of both projects, having been over six months since our last update. Currently, the producer is in the middle of filming The Sorcerer's Apprentice with Jon (National Treasure) Turtletaub in New York City, while Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is well into its post-production, with both movies scheduled for release in the summer of 2010.
That doesn't mean that those other projects aren't in development, but Bruckheimer told us that for Disney, the priority is most definitely "Pirates." "It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "We love the character and Johnny was really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."
Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going" although he wouldn't share more than that.
Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game BioShock, we asked Bruckheimer if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him." [...]

Pirates 4 Starts Shooting Spring '10
Comic-Con is in full swing at this point, and ComingSoon.net got a surprise interview with Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv where we talked about the genesis of some of the projects they were showing at the con, though we did have a lot of questions about future Disney plans as well. One of the movies that's still on the forefront of everyone's mind is the fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean." Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told us a few weeks back that they were working on a script, but Aviv and Disney are definitely on board as we learned when we discovered that they have plans to be rolling film on the movie as early as next year.
"We're going to shoot 'Pirates 4' in April and May of next year," Aviv told us during our interview. "We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan." He said that this time they would only be doing one movie this time that would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."
"It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger," Aviv admitted. "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie. Still no word on whether Gore Verbinski might come back for the fourth movie.
Look for our full interview with Mr. Aviv very soon. It will definitely be of great interest to anyone who is wondering how Disney has been making decisions about some of the movies they've been making and will make in the future.

Is Rob Marshall Dancing His Way into Directing Pirates 4?
Just one week after ComingSoon.net broke the news that Walt Disney Pictures is hoping to get the cameras rolling on the 4th "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie in April or May of next year, Variety is reporting that director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and the upcoming musical Nine) is in talks with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer to helm the fourth chapter in the adventures of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. It makes sense that they would actively be looking for a director if they plan to start shooting next spring, especially with Gore Verbinski still being noncommittal about possibly returning for the fourth go-round.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 4" Storyline Confirmed
Geoffrey Rush previously mentioned that he believes the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie would follow Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa on a quest to find the fountain of youth. Hollywood-Elsewhere has now confirmed with its sources that the fountain of young plotline is exactly what the new movie will focus on, adding that there will be a Captain Nemo-type villain utilizing new-style technology. Disney has recently said that "Pirates 4" will go in front of the cameras in April of next year and will likely be released by 2011. No word on whether actor/comedian Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) will play Jack Sparrow's younger brother Jonathan.

Johnny Depp Considering Dropping Out of "Pirates of the Caribbean 4"?
Just one week after appearing at D23 Expo to make several big announcements, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook has now been fired by Disney CEO Bib Iger after 38 years of service.
"I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney," said Cook. "From the beginning as a ride operator on Disneyland's steam train and monorail to my position as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. During my time at the Studio, we have achieved many industry and Company milestones. Our talent roster is simply the best in the business. I believe our slate of upcoming motion pictures is the best in our history. But most of all, I love the people, my colleagues, my teammates, who are the most talented, dedicated and loyal folks in the world."
Apparently after receiving the news, Cook immediately called Johnny Depp to break the news. "He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it,'" Depp revealed. "He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason."
The actor said it was because of Cook that he ended up working with Disney in the first place and the reason he committed to the "Pirates" films. "He said, 'We're thinking about doing this 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie,'" Depp recalled. "I said I was in. This was before there was a script or anything."
As for the fourth planned "Pirates" movie, Depp said while he has a potential deal in place that will depend on how good the script is, his passion for the project at the moment has been severely dampened by the news that Cook will no longer be around. "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office."

Geoffrey Rush Ready for Pirates of the Caribbean 4
MTV talked to Geoffrey Rush who says he's ready to reprise his role of Barbossa in Spring 2010 for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The fourth installment is scheduled to be released in Summer 2011. He said: "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they're not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn't be so good."

Marshall Optimistic About Directing 4th Pirates
Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with director Rob Marshall (Chicago) and talk about his fantastic new Fellini-inspired musical Nine, an interview we hope to share with you soon, and eventually the conversation got around to his next movie, which is taking over the directing reigns on Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
"I was so surprised they called me," he told us when asked how that gig came about. "It was Johnny Depp and Jerry Bruckheimer. Jerry called me, but Johnny was interested in working with me. It's a wonderful thing when something like that happens, so we sat and met and he could not have been more lovely. He's the nicest man. I've been very lucky to work with some great people and he's one of them. So I could tell that we could maybe do this, and then they offered it to me."
"We're still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen," he continued. "If it happens--I think Johnny's doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring (that's The Tourist)--so if it happens, we'll start in the summer, and we'll see. I'm excited. If it happens, it happens. I'd be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I'm excited about the genre."
"I would need a script first," he laughed when asked what direction he hoped to take the movie visually. "It all comes from the script and the story. You serve the story and you find out what the story is and then you work from there, that's it. It's simple."
The question on most minds (okay, maybe not but we asked it anyway) was whether Marshall had the sea legs to direct a "Pirates" movie but he didn't seem to nervous about the amount of time he might be spending on water. "I like the sea, but I know a lot of it I don't actually have to be on the boat itself," he said, "I can be off with my monitor and they can be on the boat. I'm sure I'll jump on there and be on there many times because I actually enjoy water so I'm excited about that."

Pirates 4 details!
Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, confirmed a June start for the fourth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and reaffirmed that Johnny Depp will definitely star, despite rumors last year to the contrary. Depp had suggested that his enthusiasm for the film had waned after Walt Disney Studios chair Dick Cook stepped down, but Bruckheimer has his star confirmed for the movie with director Rob Marshall.
"Yeah, everything's fine," Bruckheimer said in a group interview on Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting his new TV show Miami Medical. "We're moving forward. We hope to start in June, and Rob Marshall's set. We're moving forward."
That still leaves a few months to decide whether other Pirates regulars will return: Bruckheimer has not decided whether the previous trilogy's co-stars—Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush—will be involved.
"No deals have been made yet, other than Johnny's," Bruckheimer continued. "We'll make those decisions later and let you know."
Inspired by the Tim Powers novel On Stranger Tides, the fourth Pirates movie will pick up where the last one, At World's End, left off. "I think it kind of takes off from the end of 3, where he's got that map to the fountain of youth," Bruckheimer said. "That's where the story starts. That was the inspiration."
World's End climaxed with a sword fight on top of a sinking ship in a whirlpool. Now it's up to Rob Marshall to top that. "Rob Marshall is an ex-choreographer, so I'm sure he'll find some really interesting things to play with," Bruckheimer said. "Hopefully there will always be signature sequences."

Orlando Bloom Will NOT be in "Pirates of the Caribbean 4"
This was already expected, but Orlando Bloom has now confirmed that he will not appear in "Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides," which is getting ready to begin filming in Hawaii this summer.
"No, definitely not," said Bloom about returning for the fourth installment. "I think Will is sort of swimming around with the fish at the bottom of the ocean."
And it seems that Bloom doesn't mind skipping the new film. "I had a great time making those movies," he said. "I just really wanted to do different things, but I think it's going to be great."
And as previously reported, Keira Knightley will also not appear in "Pirates 4."

McShane to Play Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean!
Ian McShane ("Deadwood") is in negotiations to play the villain Blackbeard in Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, to be directed by Rob Marshall.
The Hollywood Reporter says McShane will play the legendary pirate--whose real name was Edward Teach--who piloted the ship Queen Anne's Revenge.
McShane will join Johnny Depp, reprising his role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and Penelope Cruz, Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways, in a story that revolves around the Fountain of Youth.
Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot wrote the script for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is scheduled for a May 20, 2011 release.

Bruckheimer on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
In February, we learned that both Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz were joining Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It was reported that McShane would play the villain Blackbeard, but it wasn't clear which role Cruz would take on.
In talking with MTV, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Cruz is playing Blackbeard's daughter. "She's the daughter of the bad guy," he said. You can expect "a little romance between Captain Jack and the new character that Penelope plays." He said "she brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she's so feisty."
Bruckheimer added that Blackbeard is "the nastiest pirate ever."
The producer also confirmed that Geoffrey Rush, who played Barbossa in the first three "Pirates" films, is indeed returning.
As for more roles to be cast, Bruckheimer said they they are "looking for some new kids to be in it, we're testing right now."
Asked how different this film will be, he said "we're going to take a whole new direction," but he did mention that "it is a continuation of what you saw last time, he's in search for the Fountain of Youth."
The Rob Marshall-directed film is scheduled to start filming in June for a May 20, 2011 release.

Astrid Bergès-Frisbey Picked for Pirates of the Caribbean
Walt Disney Pictures has announced that French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey has been personally picked by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall to star in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid encountered by Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow.
A star of stage and screen in her native Paris, the 23-year-old actress born in Barcelona to French-American and Catalan parents has appeared in films such as Bruc and La Première Étoile as well as work on television and in a French production of Peter Shaffer's "Equus." To date, none of those films have made their way to the U.S. shores so that "On Stranger Tide" will more than likely be the actresses introduction not only to moviegoers in the United States, but much of the rest of the world as well.
Scheduled to start filming in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles in June for a May 20, 2011 release, the fourth installment is looking to build on the $2.7 billion made globally by the original trilogy.

Sam Claflin Added to the Pirates of the Caribbean Cast
Sam Claflin has been selected by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall to star in the key role of Philip, a youthful missionary, in Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films' epic adventure Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth in the blockbuster series of films. Claflin joins Johnny Depp, returning in his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow, as well as Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and an international cast. The film is slated to open on May 20, 2011.
Hailing from the United Kingdom, Claflin attended The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He then won roles in the historical mini-series "The Pillars of the Earth," alongside actors Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Matthew MacFadyen and Donald Sutherland, followed by the telefilm "The Lost Future."
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is directed by Rob Marshall, whose first feature film was the Academy Award-winning Chicago, followed by Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer's films include (producing with Don Simpson) Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Flashdance, and (producing solo) Con Air, Armageddon, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy and the "National Treasure" franchise, as well as this summer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. JBTV's current series are "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation" and its spin-offs "C.S.I.: Miami," "C.S.I.: NY" and "Cold Case," "The Amazing Race" and "Miami Medical."
The first three films in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series amassed a total international box office of $2.7 billion.
Beginning in June, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will film entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles.

Disney Scaling Back Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean
The Los Angeles Times has published an interesting article talking about how Walt Disney Pictures is trying to keep the budget for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides under control. Here are some excerpts from the article. There is also a spoiler below, but we'll be giving you plenty of warning before you get to it...
In discussing the script for the fourth "Pirates" film, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio were told that Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow character would spend more time on land than water because of the high cost of shooting on the high seas.
To save more money, the number and selection of filming locations changed. Whereas the prior installments were shot in the Caribbean and Los Angeles, the upcoming production will be filmed primarily in Hawaii and London, where tax credits are more favorable. The number of shooting days scheduled is 90 to 95, down from 142 on the last movie. Similarly, there are expected to be 1,300 to 1,400 visual effects shots, compared with 2,000.
As preproduction gets underway in Hawaii, Marshall and Bruckheimer are going through the script line by line looking for more places to trim costs.
Gone is one shooting location four hours north of London that would have required an overnight stay for the cast and crew. Instead, filming in London will save $3 million to $4 million.
Here it is, the spoiler you may not want to know in advance. If you don't want to know anything about specific scenes in the movie, we suggest you turn back now...
Still here? Here goes...
An "ice fair," in which jugglers and carnival acts would perform on a frozen River Thames, was excised too.
The filmmakers are also looking to shorten an elaborate carriage chase. As written, the scene in which the British pursue Jack Sparrow through the streets of London would require 12 shooting days, but it is being cut to four to six days.
Directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is scheduled to hit theaters on May 20, 2011.

Rossio Addresses Pirates 4 Budget Cut Report
Remember this report by the Los Angeles Times about budget cuts for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides? Co-writer Terry Rossio has reponded on his message boards saying that it's a non-story:
This is a great example of entertainment reporting, and has been the source of much amusement around the production offices.
Here's what really happened. An LA Times reporter decided (ahead of any facts) to write a story about cutbacks on summer movies, Pirates in particular. He then managed to get a general interview or two. In the course of the interview, like any responsible studio or producer, people maintained they were trying to get the best movie possible at a reasonable price. Imagine that.
The reporter then had just enough credibility to write a story with a slant.
No need for the facts to get in the way. My guess is the budget on P4 will be higher than P1, in the realm of P2, and lower than P3. (And the difference there has more to do with the difficulty of shooting two movies, deadlines, hurricanes, tank issues, multiple star salaries, and myriad other details.) Hard to even tell, as the budget on P4 contains various tax deferments, and the decision has still not been made to shoot in 3D. Actually, the budget on P4 isn't even set yet, so really, there is nothing to report.
The truth is, the studio and everyone involved fought just as hard to lower the budgets of P1, P2, and P3 as they are on P4. Nothing has changed. Are there budget meetings on P4 to look for ways to get the most for the money? Of course. Same as on every film. It's a complete non-story. But now the 'spin' is out there, sure to be repeated.
Directed by Rob Marshall, "On Stranger Tides" stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and Sam Claflin. It is scheduled for a May 20, 2011 release.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to be Filmed in 3D
A lot of the 2011 summer tentpole releases have already been announced as being either filmed in 3D or converted afterwards, but so far, May 2011 has been somewhat devoid of 3D release announcements... until now!
Walt Disney Pictures has announced that the fourth installment of Jerry Bruckheimer's popular action franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, directed by Rob Marshall, will be filmed in Disney Digital 3D. Bruckheimer's only previous 3D movie before that was last year's G-Force.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is still slated for release on May 20, 2011.

Geoffrey Rush Confirmed to Return to Pirates of the Caribbean
As the development and casting of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film has gone forward, we’d basically known that Geoffrey Rush (the series’ secret weapon) would return as the formerly villainous pirate Captain Hector Barbossa. Now his return is confirmed.
Variety says that Rush plays “one of the few returning characters” from the previous three films. That is, we know that major actors like Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not back — essentially, it’s Johnny Depp and Rush marking the core returning faces.
A rundown of what we know about the film:
* Rob Marshall directs from Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott’s script. The shoot, in 3D starts later this month in Hawaii.
* Rossio and Elliott have written all four Pirates films; this one is based in some small part on the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. The novel has the fountain of youth as a core plot point; of the novel Rossio said “we wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth… it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book.”
* Stephen Graham plays “Scram, a Machiavellian pirate,” who’ll be “a sidekick to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.”
* Ian McShane is the pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, and Penelope Cruz is his daughter, a foil for Sparrow.
* Sam Claflin and Max Irons are in the film, too, and French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey plays a mermaid named Syrena.
* Smaller returning characters are Kevin McNally’s Joshamee Gibbs, and Greg Ellis‘ Theodore Groves. Keith Richards has been said to be returning, and there have been rumors that Mick Jagger would show up, too.

Gemma Ward Swims into Pirates Of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Australian newspaper The Courier Mail (spotted by the local boys at Moviehole) is reporting that Australian supermodel turned actress Gemma Ward will be joining Johnny Depp and fellow Aussie Geoffrey Rush in Rob Marshall's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is currently shooting in Hawaii.
The 23-year-old Perth-born model, who quite ironically had her beauty covered in a doll mask in Bryan Bertino's The Strangers and previously appeared in the Australian drama The Black Balloon, will be joining French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mermaid in the movie, which is scheduled for release on May 20, 2011 in 2D and 3D theaters. It will only be a small speaking role.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Story Details
Last week, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had begun filming in Hawaii and we've known for a while that the story will revolve around the Fountain of Youth, but today's start of filming press release from Disney gives some more details:
Production has commenced on location in Hawaii, the United Kingdom and Los Angeles on Walt Disney Pictures' and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' sweeping comedy adventure "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), the fourth entry in the blockbuster franchise which has already reaped $2.7 billion in worldwide box office from the previous three films, and the first to be filmed and presented in Disney Digital 3D(TM). Johnny Depp returns to his iconic, Academy Award(R)-nominated role of Captain Jack Sparrow, newly joined by Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona," Rob Marshall's "Nine"), Ian McShane (HBO's "Deadwood") and newcomers Astrid Berges-Frisbey and Sam Claflin. Also rejoining Johnny Depp and Captain Jack are Academy Award-winner and three-time nominee Geoffrey Rush ("Shine," " Shakespeare in Love") and Kevin R. McNally (first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, "Valkyrie"). The film is slated to open May 20, 2011.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise --this time in Disney Digital 3D(TM). In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he's not sure if it's love--or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
Rush reprises his role as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally returns as Captain Jack's longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs. Claflin stars as a stalwart missionary, while Berges-Frisbey is transformed into a mysterious mermaid.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is written by "Pirates" veterans Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio. The executive producers are Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, Barry Waldman, Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio and John DeLuca.
Joining Bruckheimer and Marshall for the new voyage is a top-flight group of award-winning behind-the-scenes artists, including director of photography Dariusz Wolski (first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, Tim Burton's " Alice in Wonderland"), production designer John Myhre (two-time Academy Award(R) winner for Marshall's "Chicago" and "Memoirs of a Geisha"), costume designer Penny Rose (all three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"), visual effects supervisor Charles Gibson, who won an Academy Award for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," Oscar(R) winner and eight-time nominee special effects supervisor John Frazier ("Pirates of the Caribbean" films," "Pearl Harbor") and stunt coordinator George Marshall Ruge, who also devoted his talents to the previous three "Pirates" films as well as Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's "National Treasure" franchise. The editors include two Oscar winners, Michael Kahn ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time") and David Brenner ("Born on the Fourth of July"), as well as Wyatt Smith ( Marshall's "Nine").
Rob Marshall's first three films, "Chicago," "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Nine," have been honored with a total of 23 Academy Award(R) nominations. For his work on "Chicago," winner of six Oscars(R) including Best Picture, Marshall received the Director's Guild Award, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe Award(R) nomination, a BAFTA nomination The National Board of Review Award and the New York Film Critics Online Award. A six-time Tony Award(R) nominee and George Abbott Award winner, Marshall's extensive work on Broadway includes co-director and choreographer of the worldwide award-winning production of "Cabaret" and director/choreographer of the Broadway revival of "Little Me," along with many others. He also produced, directed and choreographed the NBC television special "Tony Bennett: An American Classic," which earned seven Emmy Awards(R), including three for Marshall, and directed and choreographed Disney/ABC's critically acclaimed movie musical "Annie," which received 12 Emmy nominations with two wins, including Marshall for Outstanding Choreography; it also won the prestigious Peabody Award.
First in partnership with Don Simpson, and then as the chief of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Bruckheimer has produced an unprecedented string of worldwide smashes, impacting not only the industry, but mass culture as well. Bruckheimer's films include (producing with Don Simpson) "Top Gun " "Beverly Hills Cop," "Beverly Hills Cop 2," "American Gigolo," "Flashdance," "Bad Boys," "Dangerous Minds," "Crimson Tide," "The Rock," and (producing solo) "Con Air," " Armageddon," "Enemy of the State," "Gone in 60 Seconds," "Coyote Ugly," " Remember the Titans," "Pearl Harbor," "Black Hawk Down," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Bad Boys II," "Veronica Guerin," " King Arthur," "National Treasure," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "National Treasure: Book of Secrets, " "G-Force," "Confessions of a Shopaholic," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."
On television, Bruckheimer had an unprecedented 10 television series airing in the 2005-6 season, a record in the medium for an individual producer. JBTV's series have included "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation" and its spinoffs " C.S.I.: Miami," "C.S.I.: NY" and "Without a Trace," "Cold Case," "The Amazing Race" and "Dark Blue."
Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Television have been honored with 41 Academy Award(R) nominations, six wins, eight Grammy Award(R) nominations, five wins, 23 Golden Globe(R) nominations, four wins, 88 Emmy Award(R) nominations, 18 wins, 23 People's Choice nominations, 15 wins, numerous MTV Awards, including one for Best Picture of the Decade for "Beverly Hills Cop" and 20 Teen Choice Awards.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" will film on the islands of Kauai and Oahu, Hawaii, followed by locations and studio work in the United Kingdom and Los Angeles.
