Quote:
Jessica Alba Seeking More 'Family Friendly' Roles for Her Daughter's Sake

Over the last few years, Jessica Alba hasn’t shied away from racy roles in R-rated films – we’ve seen her get down and dirty as Dane Cook’s love interest in “Good Luck Chuck,” flash some flesh as stripper Nancy Callahan in “Sin City,” and more recently, play a high-class hooker in the dark thriller “The Killer Inside Me.”

But since giving birth to daughter Honor Marie just over two years ago, it seems Alba is starting to reconsider her racy roles.

"I think there is a nice balance (between “family friendly” and more adult films) but it would be fun to do more films that my daughter can see,” the 29-year-old said.

And although Alba’s status as a sex symbol, which earns her high placement on “Most Desirable” or “Hot Lists” in almost every men’s magazine, often generates more media attention than her acting – she also wants the opportunity to portray more than just a pretty face.

“I like finding a character who finds herself, finds strengths and actually uses her damn stilettos (for a purpose) instead of just killing her feet,” she continued.

And when she's not on camera, Alba does just that – dedicating time to an array of charities including Habitat for Humanity, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Project HOME, RADD, Revlon Run/Walk for Women, SOS Children Villages, Soles4Souls, and Step up.

But what’s one change she would like all Americans to make?

“Just to have a consciousness that everything that you do does affect someone else or the planet, and that comes with love,” she said.

Speaking of making a difference, the starlet is also urging Americans to continue doing all they can to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina – as even five years after the disaster struck, Alba doesn’t believe we’ve done anywhere near enough in terms of restoration.

"I think once we rebuild everything that's been torn down, then we've done enough. So until that happens, we haven't."

31.08.2010 - Uomo Vogue Dinner For Quentin Tarantino

Jessica Alba at Home

Image

Jessica Alba Invites You Over
At the end of a secluded cul-de-sac in Los Angeles, inside her lush, light-filled home, one of Hollywood's sexiest stars spends a Saturday doing the unthinkable: cooking for a bunch of people on her day off. But for Jessica Alba, whom you'll next see kicking butt in the action-exploitation flick Machete (Sept. 3), this is far from drudgery. It's a precious opportunity to play hostess, a role close to her heart. Among those lucky enough to score an invitation to the 29-year-old actress' private dinner party on August 21 was photographer Jeff Vespa, who captured, exclusively for LIFE, a side of the star she was eager to share: Here, check out Alba, radiant and relaxed, as she shows off her kitchen skills, kicks back with an art book in her living room (pictured), and enjoys the view from what she calls her "woman's room."

Image

Wrought-Iron Maiden
Alba stands outside the ornate gate that separates her eclectic dining room from the back patio. Following renovations to the kitchen and other areas of the house, Alba, her husband Cash Warren, and their 2-year-old daughter Honor recently moved back in -- and on this day she's ready to open her doors to a diverse group of guests: a close childhood friend who is now her makeup artist; a cousin and his family; her stylist; a son of her Machete costar Danny Trejo.

Image

Jessica on the Grill
On screen, she's been a superhero (Fantastic Four), a lasso-wielding stripper (Sin City), and a tough-as-nails immigration agent (the new Machete) -- but at home, Alba enjoys the simple things. Like barbecuing. Here, she keeps an eye on the chicken and carne asada for her dinner party. She and husband Cash Warren, who had an outdoor kitchen set up as part of the home renovation, also grilled lamb chops, carrots, and eggplant. Someday, they hope to finally make wood-fired pizza -- the white, fireplace-like structure pictured in the background is the oven for it -- but probably not anytime soon. "In order to start using it, you have to cure the oven -- it has to be watched, and at a specific temperature, for 40 hours," photographer Vespa says. "Who has that much time?"

Image

Apron On
Alba puts together a veggie dish made with sliced zucchini, pine nuts, basil, parmesan -- and very generous portions of two key ingredients. "She put a whole bottle of olive oil and a bottle of balsamic in these salads, and I was thinking, Is this going to be any good?" Vespa says. "But it was delicious."

Image

The Knives Come Out
Slicing up feta for another salad.

Image

Service With a Smile
The most famous barista ever? Alba pours the fruit-infused tea she made using a coffee press. Among the other drinks she and a friend mixed for the party: sangria, plus a citrus cocktail chilled with frozen pineapple chunks, reports Vespa.

Image

All Set
Among the dishes Alba lays out: roasted tomatoes with pesto and burrata (a creamy mozzarella); a salad with shredded carrots, feta, cherry tomatoes, and avocado; and grilled eggplant. Though the unique chandelier provides ambience, most of the light coming into Alba's dining room is natural -- the space is covered overhead but open to the gorgeous California sun on one side. The actress and her family also soak up rays by their very cool swimming pool, fed by a manmade stream from an adjacent hill.

Image

The Living Room
Besides working in the kitchen, the actress also enjoys doing improvement projects around the house -- "actually getting in there and sanding and priming," Vespa says. Earlier this year, Alba put her know-how to the test as a celebrity volunteer on ABC's TV hit Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, helping Ty Pennington and his crew build a home for a big-hearted Texas family affected by Hurricane Ike.

Image

Where Jessica Goes to Relax
Alba poses on the balcony off the master bedroom, the area of the house she's designated as her "woman's room" for relaxing and sneaking in some private time. (She also has a separate, full room she uses as a closet.) Even on the day of the dinner party, she was still perfecting the design of the balcony space -- reupholstered white chairs were delivered just as her guests arrived.

Image

Tea Time
Alba takes a breather on the back patio. Just two days later, it was announced that she will re-team with Machete director Robert Rodriguez for Spy Kids 4, another action-packed adventure. But this time, her character is a little closer to reality: She'll play a mom balancing her peaceful home life with her thrilling, sexy job.

Jessica Alba deftly defies stereotypes, tries out new roles

At first glance, Jessica Alba lives up to assumptions: beautiful, tall, glamorous and aloof. But within a few minutes, the sex symbol turns on the charm, shedding the ice-princess aura for something friendlier and more engaging. She offers restaurant recommendations, asks questions about hometowns and reminisces about the days before texting and bloggers.

The mood switch can't be easy, considering she has been on a two-day press junket for her new Robert Rodriguez flick, Machete, in theaters Friday. But the transition is seamless, which is a testament to her admiration for the filmmaker, who also directed Alba, 29, in Sin Cityand the upcoming Spy Kids 4.

"He's so inspiring," she says. "He's a renegade. He shows that you can have a functioning system that appeals to the same audience, and it's just as relevant in pop culture, and it doesn't have to cost what the traditional studio movies cost. Machete was a true independent film. It was gritty, it was low-budget, but you don't see that. The quality of his films (equals that of) $100 million movies."

Ready to try new things

Alba, too, is ready to do things her way. She concedes that her career, while lucrative, hasn't always been fulfilling.

"I have made, since I've had my daughter (Honor Marie Warren, 2), a concerted effort to concentrate on the filmmaker, first and foremost, and the role and the story," she says. "Before, my priority was very business-driven and business-oriented, and now it's about evolving as an actor more than anything.

"Working with a filmmaker that you believe in and that can push you, for me, was what I wanted to focus most on. And, it's like, if I'm not going to spend time with my daughter, it has to be worth it."

Apparently, Machete was well worth the time: It marks not only another chance to collaborate with Rodriguez but is also the half-Mexican Alba's first Latina role.

She describes her immigration and customs enforcement officer character as "an intelligent, fierce, independent woman," which made the role that much more appealing.

"For me, I never wanted to reinforce any stereotypes about Latin women, and that was why I've shied away from Latin characters I've been offered. Most of them reinforced the stigmas. The women whom I grew up with are intelligent, strong women, and unless I read a woman being portrayed that way in a film, I didn't want to play it.

"There's enough people that will reinforce those stereotypes, and I didn't need to participate in that. This woman is just as fierce as the men, and so I'm proud to bring that to life and put that imagery in people's heads."

Much more than a pretty face

The imagery in people's heads about Alba probably includes perennial inclusion on "sexiest" lists and paparazzi shots of her with Honor and producer husband Cash Warren, 31. She says she doesn't enjoy fame but realizes that privacy invasion comes with the territory.

"I don't want to sound like a complainer, because I think it comes off as obnoxious and it's hard for anyone to really have any understanding of it unless they're in it, and you just sound whiny and lame. I understand what it is. There's good and bad to everything, and I just leave it at that."

She laughs away the standard "very boring" celeb response to questions about her home life and says she's still adjusting to watching her baby get older.

Honor, who was born just a few weeks after Alba and Warren were married, is "talking and running around and being silly," the proud mother says. Her favorite phrases are " 'Can I please have it? Can I please try it? Touch it?' "

And the tot has an interesting hobby. "She loves to identify people's gender. She's funny about it, because she knows what a boy is and what a girl is and what makes them a boy or a girl. She likes to talk about it right when she meets people. It's a little embarrassing," Alba says with a chuckle. "She thinks she's really funny, and she is funny."

And she's growing like a weed, too.

"She's a big girl; it's sad. She's taller than our staircase railing. It's like, 'How did you get taller than that?' It's crazy. I cannot imagine her going to school. I can't even imagine her being potty-trained. And I'm keeping her in that crib for as long as humanly possible! She's going to be, like, touching each end before I get her out of there."

Alba says more children are "totally" in her future, but for now, she's happy with her life and career.

"I love the variety of working on an action movie like (Machete), doing The Killer Inside Me (with Casey Affleck) and then doing Little Fockers (with Ben Stiller, due at Christmas). I've had the most fun I've ever had, so as long as I can continue to do this kind of stuff, it's my dream."

10.09.2010 - Jessica Alba am JFK Airport in New York

Image Image Image Image

Quote:
Q&A: Jessica Alba

The ‘Machete’ star explains her awful movies and why all working moms are badasses

Actress Jessica Alba, whose three “Worst Actress” Razzie nominations are far eclipsed by her infinite mentions on “World’s Sexiest Women” lists, won’t rate her own acting ability or physical appearance on a scale of 1 to 10. We asked.

Yet the “Machete” star, who once said the box office was all that mattered to her and previously starred in garbage like “Into the Blue,” “Good Luck Chuck,” “Awake,” “The Eye” and “The Love Guru,” seems to recognize that so far her movie career hasn’t been very good.

“Basically in every movie that I did after ‘Dark Angel’ and before I had my daughter, I had just a different agenda and outlook on the business,” says Alba, 29, by phone from Miami. “And now, after I had my daughter [in June 2008], I’m putting much more of an emphasis on being creatively and artistically fulfilled and challenged and really [putting] a huge emphasis on the filmmaker.”

Alba does have positive things to say about her role in “Sin City,” playing a female superhero in the “Fantastic Four” franchise and the empowering themes of “Honey.”

Recently, Alba has taken more risks (excluding her work in Garry Marshall’s awful “Valentine’s Day,”), playing a prostitute in Michael Winterbottom’s controversial “The Killer Inside Me” and re-teaming with “Sin City” co-director Robert Rodriguez for “Machete,” opening Sept. 3. In the film she plays an immigration officer tracking an underground network that assists illegal immigrants, while she looks for ex-law enforcement agent Machete (Danny Trejo), who’s caught in a violent web of political corruption.

Among the film’s standout scenes for the actress, who will be seen later this year in the partly Chicago-filmed “Little Fockers,” are a Prada pumps-enhanced fight (“I’ve always kind of fantasized about using them as a weapon because they kill my feet,” she says) and, gulp, a scene of Alba’s character in the shower. That may be surprising for anyone who knows the Los Angeles resident has long had a no-nudity clause in her contract. Explanation: “I was wearing underwear and a bra, and they took it out in post-[production].”

You’re so often complimented on your appearance. What’s a time you’ve felt insecure?

Pretty much every day on a movie set I feel a little bit insecure. Because I don’t want to disappoint the director or myself, so I’m always trying to do the best I can. I don’t know if it’s insecurity as much as just wanting to rise to the occasion and not let the filmmaker down or myself.

What did you think of Sandra Bullock accepting her Razzie award? You’ve been nominated for three.

I think it’s funny. It just shows how subjective everything is, and it also shows how you can be a great actor or actress and give a great performance, and it’s really about, at the end of the day, the way that they edit it together and promote the film.

You think the way your performance comes out has a lot to do with editing?

A lot of it has to do with editing, yeah.

Is there one you can look back on that you wish would have come out differently?

Um, yeah. Pretty much every one. [Laughs] It’s totally different when you work with great filmmakers, though, because they understand the nuances of a performance and they capture just another level. They’re not just throwing the movie together based on studio notes. They’re really looking at the characters and their motivation and the overall story. It’s a lot more complicated.

What’s something “Machete” shows of you that you haven’t done before?

Well, I’ve never played a Latin character in a film before. [Ed. Note: Alba’s father is Mexican-American.] Typically in the movies that I’ve read … Latin characters are very stereotypical. Very one-note. She can only be overtly sexy or she can only be this down-and-out maid or someone who isn’t necessarily as intelligent as other characters of different races or doesn’t have a great job. And to me, I couldn’t relate to it because the Latino women that I grew up with were all independent, they work hard, they raise their family, they are intelligent, sophisticated.

We asked readers for questions I should ask, and roughly half of them were if you would marry them. How do you feel about polygamy?

[Laughs] Um, I’m not really into polygamy, personally. It’s not really my bag of chips.

How many marriage proposals do you get per day? Have they gone up or down since you actually got married in 2008?

[Laughs] I don’t know. I guess I’ve had a few on Twitter. That’s kind of the only time I hear of marriage proposals. They’re silly; I mean, if it’s over Twitter and it’s someone I’ve never even met before, it’s kind of funny.

Someone said you should hide your looks, a la Charlize Theron in “Monster,” for people to pay attention to your acting ability. What do you think of that?

I think a lot of actresses have a difficult time being seen as anything more than the girl in the movie. And very few have broken the mold. It’s just a lack of material that is written for women, frankly.

You told Cosmopolitan you don’t consider yourself a great-looking person. What would have to change for you to feel that way?

I truly don’t put a lot of energy into it. I don’t think about it. For me it’s more important that I’m healthy and everything works and I can be a functioning person for my kid. And I’m grateful that, like I said, I have my health; that’s a big deal.

If someone is talking about you as an actress, what would you want them to say?

I don’t know. I don’t really care too much about what people think. Isn’t that terrible?

It seems like you do, though, and that you’re frustrated that people see actresses just for physical appearance and not for their abilities. What would you hope people would say about you as an actress?

“That was a good performance.” Or not. It’s so subjective. I don’t really put too much on it to be quite honest with you. And I don’t really care what people think. I love doing what I do. I feel so blessed that I get to do this for a living, and it sure beats a desk job because I would probably go crazy if I didn’t do anything creative with my time.

Your character in “Machete” has to be a little bit of a badass. How much of a badass do you consider yourself in real life?

In day-to-day life, [laughs] I don’t know. I think any working mom is a badass, frankly. Because it’s hard. And any woman who does it, or a father, any working father that is hands-on as a father and any working mom that’s hands-on as a mom, and also provides and works, it’s tough, it’s a tough balancing act. I think that’s the greatest challenge and that makes you the most badass person.

How much do you feel people fear you on the street as a result of that?

[Laughs] I don’t know if people fear me on the street. [Laughs]

They don’t say, “Watch out, working mom!”?

[Laughs] I say, “Watch out, working mom!” Even stay-at-home moms, they’re super badass. Anyone who understands that there’s a child that’s going to transcend you and is going to live longer than you and the real mark that you make, your legacy, is really how well you raise your kid and what you leave them with.

At home my fiancée does the laundry and I wash the dishes. How does the division of labor work at your house?

Well, I like to cook so it’s nice if one cooks, the other cleans. … As long as it’s equal and the work is divided up evenly, I think you’ll have a happy household. If it’s all on one person, it’s not so fun.

What’s your specialty as a cook?

I can kind of throw down almost anything. I’ve cooked Thai food, Italian; I like Mexican food, traditional American food. I’ve been grilling a lot because it’s the summer. I just got a pizza oven built, so I’m going to have to perfect my pizza bread recipe. I’m working on that one. You have to make a really good dough. The dough I think is the most important; not too thick, not too thin, a little crispy, doughy on the inside. But that takes years to perfect. So I’m working on that. And then you can put on any topping you want and it’s kind of the best thing ever.

As a California girl, how accurate do you find Katy Perry’s “California Gurls”?

I don’t know. I can’t really relate to that so much. I was never one of those California girls. [Laughs] I was kind of the teenager that wore black and kept to myself and didn’t have a ton of friends. I wasn’t like the hot cheerleader, smiley girl.

Surely this summer you must’ve melted some people’s Popsicles.

[Laughs] Well, I think the heat in California does that just fine. [Laughs]

On Chicago, where she filmed some of “Little Fockers”: “I love the steak. There’s great bars. I like taking a walk around in the city. I’ve been to some dive bars and then I’ve been to some nice restaurants, but I really couldn’t tell you any specifics. I just try out different things.”
The most interesting role she’s played: “The Killer Inside Me”
Favorite kinds of movies: Action and comedy
If she could work with anyone: James Cameron, Luc Besson, Robert Rodriguez, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro
Why her chosen superpower would be invisibility: “They can just move under the radar, and you can see people for who they really are instead of for the front that they put up.”
Her guilty pleasure: Getting a massage
TV addiction: “I Survived

Jessica Alba turned into party animal since daughter was born

Actress Jessica Alba said she's turned into more of a party animal since she became a mum.

Alba, 29, is married to producer Cash Warren and gave birth to their daughter Honor two years ago.

She said to UK newspaper Daily Record: 'I think I'm a little more wild and free since I had her because once she's in bed, all my mum friends, we get together and have dance parties at the house.

'It's really dorky but I probably would have never done that before. No, I don't go out. I hang out with my friends and I'm pretty chill.'

Alba can currently be seen starring in Robert Rodriguez's new movie Machete.
