Abrams and Cruise Reuniting for Mission: Impossible 4
Star Trek director J.J. Abrams tells TV Guide that he will be producing the fourth "Mission: Impossible" film.
"I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on 'Mission: Impossible 4,'" said Abrams, who directed 2006's Mission: Impossible III, but hasn't yet committed to directing the fourth. "Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing," he added.
The third film cost about $150 million to make and earned $397.8 million worldwide. The first pic pulled in $457.7 million worldwide on a $80 million budget and the second took in $546.3 million on a $125 million budget.
Abrams' credits include TV shows "Fringe," "Lost," "Alias" and "Felicity."

News broke last week that Star Trek helmer J.J. Abrams is going to produce Mission: Impossible IV after directing the third installment. Now, Variety adds that Paramount Pictures is targeting a 2011 release for the sequel. The trade adds that work on Mission: Impossible IV would inevitably be delayed by the busy schedules of the participants. Abrams will be responsible for guiding the Star Trek sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled film (formerly called Wichita) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

Applebaum and Nemec spent four seasons with Abrams as co-executive producers of "Alias," and they will script "M:i:IV" based on a story Abrams wrote with them.
"I've been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years," Abrams said. "Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom as well. We're off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed."

Even though JJ Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) has been hinting that he will direct the upcoming fourth installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, he has just confirmed to MTV News that he will only producing. "I'm producing with Tom [Cruise]," he said recently. "My guess is, given other things, that I will not be directing the movie."
Judging by his words, it sounds like Cruise may only be a producing as well. When asked if the star will be replaced with a younger actor, Abrams replied: "I don't want to give anything away yet, but I will say that it's a story that will feel consistent with the world that has been created. It's not a reboot kind of thing."
The script is being written by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec and is expected to be turned in by the end of the year. "We have a really cool story," added Abrams.

Paramount Pictures will clinch its deal today with Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. Cruise will produce the film with J.J. Abrams. They are looking for a director. The intention is to make this Cruise's next film and start shooting by summer. And I can definitively say that, despite chatter to the contrary, MI4 will be very much of an Ethan Hunt pic with Cruise as the main character. Gee, remember the bad old days when Cruise and Paramount parent company Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone were on the outs. Guess that old Hollywood saying is as true as ever: "I'll never work with him again -- until I need him." I hear Paramount is really excited about relaunching the franchise, whose deal has been restructured (i.e. brought down to earth) to make it more like recent Industry tentpole deals where everyone shares the risk. Cruise just completed the film Knight and Day for 20th Century Fox with a July 2nd release date. It has James Mangold directing and Cameron Diaz co-starring. More as I get it...

Brad Bird Confirmed for Mission: Impossible IV
On Thursday, Paramount Pictures announced that Mission: Impossible IV was being pushed back from May 27, 2011 to December 16, 2011. Now the director has been confirmed as well.
Tom Cruise talked to Empire magazine and said that it is indeed Brad Bird taking on the director's chair, as rumors had suggested. Bird is of course the director of critically-acclaimed movies The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille.
Cruise, who is starring and producing with J.J. Abrams, said "we're working with Brad right now. I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about it but everything's signed... Brad is doing it."
He added that "we're having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with, you get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?"

Simon Pegg May Return for Mission: Impossible IV
Although Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible IV has yet to be officially greenlit
by Paramount, Heat Vision is reporting that actor Simon Pegg is already in
talks to return as lab geek Benji Dunn in the movie targeted for a December
16, 2011 release.

ComingSoon.net has confirmed that Jeremy Renner has signed to star alongside Tom Cruise in Paramount Pictures' Mission: Impossible IV.
It is the second big part Renner has landed after his role in the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. He's also set to play Hawkeye in Marvel Studios and Paramount's The Avengers, coming to theaters on May 4, 2012. Renner can next be seen in theaters in Ben Affleck's The Town on September 17.
Production on the fourth installment of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise is scheduled to begin this fall under the direction of Brad Bird. J.J. Abrams is producing the December 16, 2011 release with Cruise.

In the same story, Deadline claims that Tom Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams, who
came up with the story together, have decided to remove the IV from the title. This
is to ensure that audiences clearly recognize that the film is a reboot, which both

Title for Next Mission: Impossible Revealed
After filming in Prague, the production for the new "Mission: Impossible" movie is moving on to Dubai. Director Brad Bird, executive producer Jeffrey Chernov, producer Bryan Burke, Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Paul Patton held a press conference there on Thursday revealing where they'll shoot and that the title for the film will be Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.
Burke mentioned that "we will be shooting in the building you are all sitting in right now," referring to Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower at 2,717 feet, where the news conference was held (see photo below).
"I'll be spending many days, many hours on the side of this building," Cruise added. "I can't give you details, but I will be up there."
In addition to Dubai and Prague, filming will also take place in Moscow and Vancouver. Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol hits theaters on December 16, 2011.

Opening in IMAX theaters last weekend and grossing enough to take third place, Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount), starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg, expanded into 3,023 theaters nationwide on Wednesday with $8.9 million and held up that business through the weekend to end up with estimated $46.2 million over the four-day weekend and $78.6 million total after 11 days in theaters. That was lower than the three-day opening of the franchise predecessor Mission: Impossible III in May 2006, but it's already grossed more money in the same number of days pointing to a higher gross than the $133.4 million made domestically by the third installment.
About $7.4 million of that amount was brought in by the roughly 400 IMAX theaters playing the movie over the four-day weekend, bringing its cumulative IMAX gross in North America to $23 million, which is roughly 31% of the film's total domestic gross. Globally, the movie has grossed $32 million in IMAX venues in the past 11 days, although some IMAX theaters only opened the movie in the last couple days. ComingSoon.net spoke with IMAX President of Filmed Entertainment Greg Foster earlier in the day and were told the company is very enthusiastic about Paramount's decision to roll the movie out in IMAX theaters early, making it the format in which many people want to see the movie. (Having the prologue for Christopher Nolan's anticipated The Dark Knight Rises in front of it probably didn't hurt.) They're seeing very consistent business for the film's IMAX release and they see it playing well into January. They plan on keeping the 70mm IMAX theaters playing even after Screen Gems' Underworld Awakening opens in digital IMAX theaters.
