Roland Emmerich on Independence Day 2

Latino Review got a chance to ask 2012 director Roland Emmerich if there's still a chance we'll see a sequel to 1996's Independence Day at some point. After all, the blockbuster made a massive $817.4 million at the worldwide box office that year. Emmerich gave an interesting response:

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we've found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says "Why don't you do it without Will Smith?" I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who's worth his gross. So we'll see what happens. I would love to do it.

Smith Locked for Two More Independence Day Movies?

IESB is reporting a rumor that Will Smith has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to make two Independence Day sequels that would be shot back-to-back.

According to the site's source, if all goes according to plan, the sequel(s) could shoot as early as 2011. Roland Emmerich would again direct after his Shakespeare drama Anonymous. The films would start after Smith completes his next project, which could either be Men in Black 3 or The City That Sailed.

The original film earned $817.4 million worldwide ($306 million domestic and $511.2 million overseas) in 1996.

'Independence Day' Sequel Scripts Ready To Move

Studios are constantly asking themselves this question: which part of our library is relevant in popular culture? One of 20th Century Fox's answers is 'Independence Day,' the fun alien flick from 1996 from director Roland Emmerich and starring 'The Fresh Prince,' Will Smith. A sequel has been brought up for years, but it might actually be ready to become a reality in this world of relics returning from the grave.

According to Vulture, Emmerich and his screenwriting buddy, Dean Devlin are just finishing up the scripts of not one, but two sequels to the film. Smith is of course wanted to star, but apparently 20th Century Fox is bold enough to move on without him if a reasonable agreement can't be reached. A quote from the source of Vulture as to why previous arrangements fell through:

"It had more to do with 'Whose dick is bigger?'"

Not only is the news of some more 'Independence Day' somewhat exciting, this article is one of the few on Latino Review that gets to incorporate the word "dick." A funny thing: apparently Smith's dick is so massive that it has audiences absolutely drooling over it. Vulture speculates that its absence is to blame for the dwindling box office attendance over the past couple of years.

Getting away from the image of Smith's dangling member herding people into theater seats, the source also spoke on the two sequels which are said to tell an interconnecting story of sorts. The source said:

"They’re intended to be fulfilling movies onto themselves — you could see each separately and enjoy them — but they tell one big story."

It's been about 15 years since the last 'Independence Day.' Is it worth reviving? And where do you go after blowing up the White House?

Titles for the Independence Day Sequels Revealed?

Even though it's been 16 years since the release of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, the talk of sequels is hotter now than it has ever been. According to an interview with FilmStarts (seen here via Bleeding Cool) the sequels will be a 'package' deal coming in the form of ID Forever - Part 1 and ID Forever - Part 2. The films will also be post converted into 3D even though Emmerich himself says he remains a '3D skeptic.'

It might still take a while for the sequels to see the light of day though, as Emmerich says, "It's a tough battle between the studio and the actors. But you have a right idea, which was quite unique, and it is therefore worth it to keep trying."

In another interview with Total Film, co-writer Dean Devlin talked about how they watched the original film again and how that has shaped their perception of making the sequel.

"The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other. As we're approaching a sequel we're focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."

20th Century Fox Cancels Independence Day 3D Plans

Although the re-release had been officially announced earlier this year, 20th Century Fox has cancelled plans for Independence Day 3D.

The post-converted version of the 1996 film was intended to hit theaters on July 3, 2013. Starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid, the Roland Emmerich film is a loose re-telling of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds." The sci-fi actioner grossed over $800 million worldwide in its original run.

What the cancellation means for the long rumored two-part sequel (tentatively titled ID Forever - Part I and ID Forever - Part II) remains to be seen.

Independence Day 2 Script Features Returning Cast Members, But No Will Smith

Following word this week of an official July 3, 2015 release date for 20th Century Fox's Independence Day 2, director Roland Emmerich has dropped a few hints about what to expect from the much-anticipated sequel.

"Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive," Emmerich told NY Daily News while promoting his latest, White House Down, "but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much."

The 1996 original also starred talent like Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, Brent Spiner, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox. Although it's not specified as to exactly who might return for the sequel, Emmerich confirms that a number of the original film's characters appear in the script by Dean Devlin and himself.

"We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film," he says, "and the other half are people who are new."

Pullman confirmed earlier this year that plans call for the return of his character, Thomas Whitmore, but no talent has been officially locked as of yet.
