Sequel Already in Development
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra has earned more than $100 million worldwide, making it Paramount's third triumphant action film of the summer, coming in behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Star Trek. This already has the studio eyeing future installments for the lucrative Hasbro property.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Paramount's vice chairman Rob Moore confirmed earlier today that a sequel is set to go into development soon. The entire cast is contractually obligated to return for a second film. The film's director, Stephen Sommers, who was rumored to have been fired during the editing stages of the first installment, is not set to come back at this time.
Though it is being hurried into pre-production, Paramount has not set a start or release date for their proposed follow-up to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Is the G.I. Joe Sequel Heading for Summer 2012, Too?
The MTV Movies Blog had a chance to talk to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and got a status report on the planned sequel to Stephen Sommers' summer 2009 hit G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which grossed $300 million last summer. Although writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have yet to submit a full script, di Bonaventura is optimistic they'll be ready to start shooting the G.I. Joe Sequel sometime next spring for a summer 2012 release.
Otherwise, Bonaventura didn't have a lot to say and was unwilling to confirm who might direct the sequel, which actors may be back and whether they might join the current trend by shooting the movie in 3D, although he did say he was "open to it."

Jon Chu to Direct G.I. Joe 2
Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with Justin Bieber: Never Say Never helmer Jon Chu to direct G.I. Joe 2, reports Heat Vision.
The site adds that the studio may have to recast major roles, as some actors won't be available. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sienna Millar may not return, with the latter's Baroness possibly to be played by another actress.
The first film, directed by Stephen Sommers, earned $302.5 million worldwide and carried production costs of about $175 million.
Chu's other directing credits include Step Up 2 the Streets, Step Up 3D and the series "The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers."

Bruce Willis Enlisting For G.I. Joe 2?
With production slated to begin later this month, the still-officially-untitled G.I. Joe Sequel is still looking to cast the part of the very first Joe, General Joe Colton. Following up on a previous rumor that Bruce Willis would be play the part, The Hollywood Reporter now says that the actor in in negotiations.
The film, to be directed by John Chu (Step Up 3D, Never Say Never), will continue the toy-inspired world depicted in 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra with a primarily new cast (except for the returning Channing Tatum as Duke, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and, likely, Byung Hun-lee as Stormshadow). Newcomers include Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Elodie Yung as Jinx, DJ Cotrona as Flint, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, RZA as The Blind Master, Joseph Mazzello as Mouse and Ray Stevenson as Firefly.
Willis recently appeared in RED and will, among other upcoming projects, star in Rian Johnson's Looper and Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom.
G.I. Joe 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 29, 2012.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Delayed Until 2013
In a surprising move, Paramount Pictures has delayed the release of their upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation until March 29, 2013, a full nine months after its originally planned release date of June 29th.
Part of the postponement allows for the film to undergo a full 3D conversion.
"It is increasingly evident that 3D resonates with movie-goers globally and together with Paramount, we made the decision to bring fans an even more immersive entertainment experience," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's President and CEO in an official statement.
The new date puts the sequel up against Andrew Niccol's adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's The Host.
Starring D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is directed by Jon M. Chu.
In the sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
