WTF! Futurama Proceeding Without Original Voices?
Contract negotiations break down between Fox and Billy West, John DiMaggio, and rest of cast.
This must stop NOW! 20th Century Fox Television is considering moving forward with the revival of Futurama without the original voice cast -- which includes voice-acting legend Billy West.
According to Variety, Fox TV -- which produces the show -- has broken off talks with Futurama's original mouthpieces and has put out an open casting call in search of other actors to replace them. The issue is, of course, money. The new round of Futurama is scheduled to air on Comedy Central with a much lower budget than the original run (which aired on Fox), forcing Fox TV to cut costs where it can.
"We love the Futurama voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands," 20th Century Fox TV said in a statement to Variety. "While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to Matt (Groening) and David (X. Cohen)'s brilliantly subversive characters."
For hardcore Futurama fans, new episodes without West (who voices Fry, the Professor, Zoidberg, and Zapp), Katey Sagal (Leela), and John DiMaggio (Bender Bending Rodriguez) may as well not exist at all. Who else can say "Bite my shiny metal ass" but DiMaggio? Who else can scream "Hiii-yah!" when Leela kicks someone's butt? And no one -- NO ONE -- can come close to matching West's clueless Fry. Even if the network finds people who can mimic them to near perfection, what happened to the good old principle of it all?
Variety says the cast members were asking for $75,000 per episode -- more than $300,000 less than what Simpsons cast members make. However, we're hoping that Fox is just playing hardball, and -- fingers crossed -- a deal will be reached.
26 new episodes of Futurama are due to begin airing on Comedy Central sometime in 2010. It's unclear whether this contract stalemate will affect the appearance of West, Sagal, and DiMaggio at this year's Comic-Con, which begins next week.
Futurama without its original voice cast? What the... I don't... ARGH!

"Futurama" will return with its original voice cast, says The Hollywood Reporter.
After a standoff with 20th Century Fox TV over salary, the five "Futurama" actors on Friday reached an agreement with the producing studio to reprise their parts on the show, set to come back with new episodes on Comedy Central in mid-2010.
The deals for Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, John DiMaggio and Billy West all closed with 20th TV on Friday.
"We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back," "Futurama" creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen said in a statement. "The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters."

ProSieben: Neue "Futurama"-Staffel schon im Herbst
Am 24. Juni beginnt Comedy Central mit der Ausstrahlung der neuen Folgen. Und
auch die deutschen Fans müssen offensichtlich gar nicht mehr allzu lange warten:
ProSieben, das auch die ersten fünf Staffeln der Serie ausgestrahlt hat, hat sich
die Rechte an der sechsten Staffel ebenfalls gesichert und kündigt die Ausstrah-
lung bereits für den Herbst - also wenige Monate nach dem US-Start - an.

"Futurama" feierte sieben Jahre nach seiner Einstellung bei FOX ein furioses Come-
back bei Comedy Central: 2,9 Millionen Zuschauer schalteten den Auftakt zur sechs-
ten Staffel ein. Damit war es laut Comedy Central die erfolgreichste Premiere einer
animierten Serie im US-Kabelfernsehen nach "South Park". Bei den jungen Männern
unter 35 war es sogar insgesamt die meistgesehene Sendung am Donnerstag. Die
zweite Folge direkt im Anschluss sahen noch 2,8 Millionen Zuschauer. In der werbe-
relevanten Zielgruppe lag der Marktanteil bei 5 Prozent. Dem Sender Comedy
Central bescherte "Futurama" den erfolgreichsten Abend des Jahres.

Blöde Frage aber müssen nicht vorher die Filme gelaufen sein? Die Serie schließt doch auch daran an und die liefen doch noch nicht oder habe ich da was verpasst? |

Die Filme wurden zu Serienepisoden umgeschnitten. Die erste Folge trägt deshalb den Titel 'Bender's Big Score (1)'.
