Universal Pictures has snagged a release date for the yet-untitled sixth installment of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, temporarily titled Fast and Furious 6, and according to Deadline, they'll be releasing the movie on May 24, 2013 over Memorial Day weekend.

Produced by Neal Moritz, the franchise has grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide with the recent Fast Five having grossed nearly $600 million globally on its won.

There's no confirmation that director Justin Lin will be returning for his fourth movie in a row, although he's talked about completing the trilogy that began with 2009's Fast and Furious. There isn't any word on how much of the ensemble cast from Fast Five will be returning, but considering that they've established a new heist thriller format, one would expect at least Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson, who joined the franchise with the last film, playing a special forces agent sent to stop the streetracin' criminals.

Fast & Furious 6 is the third movie to be scheduled for May 2013, although recent word and the fact it's also from Universal puts further question on whether Ron Howard's The Dark Tower would open the week before as previously scheduled.

Last year, when ComingSoon.net visited the set of Fast Five, Diesel was already setting his sights on a sixth film, which he envisioned as the end of a second trilogy.

"I've always had kind of an allergic reaction to taking a reactionary approach to a sequel," he said of why he didn't immediately return after the first film. "My gut feeling about sequels is that they should be premeditated. You should try to write a trilogy first or at least sketch out a trilogy if you have any faith in your film. You should think about where the film is going over a series of films... This is a trilogy... When I was thinking of this 'Fast & Furious,' I thought of it as three stories. The one that you saw, this one and the final one."

Whether that planned finale is still the arc that both upcoming sequels will follow remains to be seen, but Universal is currently set to begin production on at least Fast & Furious 6 next year with Justin Lin back behind the wheel as director, aiming for a May 24, 2013 release. It is possible (and has been rumored) that both sequels will shoot back-to-back to take advantage of scheduling around the sizable ensemble cast.

Those who stayed after the end credits of Fast Five will not be surprised to learn that, despite her character's apparent demise earlier in the franchise, Michelle Rodriguez is now confirmed by Variety to reprise her role as Letty Ortiz in next year's Fast & Furious 6. The outlet also confirms that the Avatar star will be back on the big screen as Luz/Shé in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson are confirmed to be returning for Fast & Furious 6 with many of the regulars expected to be back as well and Gina Carano said to be in talks. Details of the plot are currently few but Six, like Five, is expected to be a heist film and will shoot in Europe beginning in June.

Production on Machete Kills, meanwhile, is set to begin imminently in Texas with Danny Trejo's Machete teaming with the U.S. Government to take on a Mexican drug cartel and a James Bond-style villain who seeks world domination with a satellite weapon.

Fast & Furious 6 is scheduled for release on May 24, 2013 with the release date for Machete Kills still to be determined.
